If I had told you on 9/11/2001 that we'd go four and half years and counting without another terrorist attack on US soil, would you have believed me?

If I had told you that US-led forces would secure Afghanistan in just a few months...something the Soviets couldn't accomplish in ten years...would you have thought I was crazy?

If I had told you that Saddam was gone, that Khadaffy had renounced terrorism, and that Iraq was on the verge of becoming the second democracy in the Middle East, would have thought I was on medication?

Sometimes in our disappointment of this administration, we often forget some of the positives. The economy is strong. More Americans are homeowners. With tax cuts, we're spending less time working for Uncle Sam.

And if you take those benefits for granted, just imagine how much different things would be under a President Al Gore.

So if the president's stance on immigration and spending upset you - and they do upset me - what are you going to do about it? Stay at home? Nothing could be worse for conservativism. Your non-support will usher in more immigrants, higher taxes, and weaker national security.

If the GOP loses Congress, George W. Bush will be removed from office. Nothing would embolden terrorists more. How can we be counted on to wage an effective war when we can't even decide who our enemy is?

George W. Bush isn't the enemy. But that's exactly the message conservatives will send to the world if they stay at home this November.

If you're upset with W. on immigration - write him, write a Republican Congressman, let him know how you feel. It was conservatives who got Bush to change his mind on Harriet Meirs.

I promise you, a Democratic Congress won't be nearly as responsive to your needs.

I seriously doubt that it would be as you suggest.
I think it would be like the pro-lifer stress over Miers followed by the rush back to the colors when Alito was named. Sure, there were a handful of malcontents who tried to question Alito's credentials and pro-life commitment, but most pro-lifers are sincere conservatives and want to see the party do well. They WANT to support Republicans. Miers made that impossible, but Alito returned them to the fold.

I believe that the identical thing will be true of the border conservatives if they're given their fence this year. Listen to them right on this thread and others. They're not out there spewing general propaganda. They have AN issue of singular importance to them, which the Republican Party OUGHT TO BE with them on anyway (we already have immigration laws that are being broken, and which ought to be enforced). The GOP seems to be stiff arming them, and they are mad as hornets. I get no sense from these folks that most of them WANT to be angry with the GOP. I think most of them are scared that everything is coming apart, just like you ought to be if you care about the GOP's fortunes, because everything IS coming apart.

But what it's coming apart about, now, is illegal immigration. This is fixable. Vote for, fund and start building the fence. You will get these people back and the party will win. Sure, there will be some who really hate the GOP on principle, but not most, not at all.

Anyway, it's your only hope of holding onto the majority, so you'd best reconcile yourself to it and give it a shot, because otherwise, defeat is certain without these folks.

Toomey would have been a much better choice, and if evedryone who wanted a conservative Senator -- teh third-party voters and the Toomey supporters -- had supported Jim Clymer in November, Pennsylvania would have a pair of conservative Senators today. But teh White House made sure Arlen won the primary. They justified it saying they always support incumbents, but that standard sure didn't hold when the incumbent in question was conservative Bob Smith.

I don't think that asking that our borders be secured from an illegal invasion and/or terrorists is fanatical. It is merely sane.

And my idea for the strong Bush loyalists on this forum: Stop your slash and burn opposition to every criticism of the president. It is not in the interest of the administration, or the GOP, to suggest that anyone troubled by W.'s stewardship is somehow disloyal. One begins to think, "if this is not my home, I need to find one." (I would be looking futher to the right, not to the left.)

Well said. I feel the same. I've voted GOP my whole life. I worked as a precinct representative and spent hours and hours on the phone and walked the neighborhoods for this president's election twice. I loved him and now I feel utterly disappointed. Of course, as disappointed as I may be, I'd NEVER vote for a democrat or throw away my vote on a third party candidate at this point. I hope and pray that Bush will still do the right thing on so many of these issues -- for his sake and the country's.
