Honest Question: Would any of you have any animosity towards Bonds if he didn't play in San Francisco?

I should say first that, inspite of living in the Bay Area, I am from SoCal and I am a Dodger fan, always have been, always will be. But my disgust with Bonds goes back to his days in Pittsburgh. This quote sums it up best:

" It was after Bonds' infamous blowup with Jim Leyland during spring training in 1991 that one of the Pirates' veterans said, "I'd rather lose without him than with win him."
Can somebody help me with the name of the player?

"Ruth didn't juice, but he did play during the segregation era." So I guess if we use this argument I guess we can say that George Washington was a lousy president because he owned slaves.

Babe Ruth will be a legend for a long time, and has been a legend for a long time already. And that's because he was the dominant player of his time.

Thanks for the thoughtful post. In my book, Babe will always be the dominant player, but that doesn't take anything away from the rest of the greats. Bonds' standing is in serious jeopardy not just for his involvement with mystery creams etc., but for a personality that denies him "guy" status in a sport dominated by "guys." Let's face it the Babe was tops in that department as well as in lots of the stats.

I have heard on some talk shows that Barry Bonds made some negative comments about white fans. If this is true how come the media is so quiet about this? Don't worry I know the answer. I find it amazing the double standard that exist. Remember John Rocker? When he made his observations about New York, that was all you heard about was what a racist he was.

In defense of Selig [an almost impossible task], when Landis was the commissioner, there was no Union, there was a reserve clause, and the owners had given him carte blanche because the Black Sox had tarnished the game to the point that the owners needed a strong commissioner. And there's some evidence that Landis was aware of Ty Cobb and, I believe, Grover Cleveland Alexander fixed a game [or games], but did nothing about it.

"I believe if Babe Ruth took care of his health and was more disciplined he could have made 800 HRs in his career easily."

If Ted Williams didn't go off to fly planes for the Marines in wars he might have hit a thousand home runs. We'll never know.

If you love Bonds and think the world is so unfair to him, you may want to look at this.

Whoa. Must've been a great weekend for me to get that absolutely backwards. (Sheesh!) But the Babe did have a great pitching record nonetheless.

Warner Wolf said that had he remained a pitcher, we wouldn't have a "Cy Young" Award today -- it'd have a different name.

‘Barry, if you sign these, they'll bring in a lot of money for kids who need help. “Bonds stood up, looked me in the eye and said, ‘I don't sign for white people.’

But it is totally believable on it's face....

I'm not even a sports fan, but was curious why people don't like Bonds. I thought it was just his personality, but this statement is MUCH worse than anything Rocker said, yet I never heard about it till I looked for it, just now. When John Rocker was harrassed, I thought he was treated horribly. I was a liberal then.

Yeah we do. 1,000 is a bit much. He would have easily eclipsed the 600 homer mark (he ended up with 521)...if you look at it, he missed 3 full seasons and most of a 4th season (1952) and part of a 5th (1953). His per year average for number of home runs hit is 27.4 something. He would have ended his career with something in the neighborhood of 650-670 homeruns. To expect anything more wouldn't be fair to him.

I should say first that, inspite of living in the Bay Area, I am from SoCal and I am a Dodger fan, always have been, always will be.

I'm a lifelong Giants fan, so I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

" It was after Bonds' infamous blowup with Jim Leyland during spring training in 1991 that one of the Pirates' veterans said, "I'd rather lose without him than with win him."

I don't need to be convinced of the fact that Bonds's character is unsavory, on the other hand, he's "our" unsavory character. My primary "concern" is this three-ring circus that's surrounding this team is being counterproductive. As I said in a previous thread, our ERA is the worst in the NL, we're five back of the Rockies of all teams, and Moises Alou is now on the DL. It isn't the fact that Bonds cheated so much as the fact that we put all of our balls into one sack.

Breaking=Barry BondsTo Go On DL-Elbow Surgery

APP-PMSNBC-NYY24/7ESPN-San Francisco: The San Francisco Giants will place Barry Bonds on the DL with what could be a career ending right elbow injury, placing him in jeporady of surpassing the next two players ahead of him on MLB's all-time Home Run List.

Giants team physician said;"This elbow injury to Barry has been festering and growing in intensity even before his arrival from the Pirates, to the SF Giants."

"Since 1999, it has become a major problem, and has now gotten to the point that the injury to his right elbow, may have finally ended his somewhat stormy career", the doctor was quoted as saying to a packed news conference.

"We have tried to help Barry by trying to make the left arm and elbow try to do what the right arm and elbow has been doing that has caused this terrible injury, but are not having much luck, although Barry has been devoting at least 8-10 hours of every waking day with the trainers here with the Giants to make him practice with his left arm to take the daily strain of Barry's activities that are causing the problem."

"But old habits are very hard to break," the team physician said. "when you've been using your right arm and elbow to CONSTANTLY, ALMOST NON-STOP, PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK FOR AT LEAST 15 YEARS, to the point of an almost permanent career ending elbow injury, it takes a lot of time to heal, and make your left arm do that work, but knowing Barry like we do, we believe he is MORE than up to the task".

It was the first thing I found that matched what Bonds was accused of saying. I had no idea he has supposedly said such things. The media really does a horrible job (what else is new...). I shouldn't say anymore cause I know nothing about sports, or baseball in particular, but find it humorous when liberals say Bonds is suffering from racism...

oh yeah, if anything Bonds has had a MUCH easier life than most other ballplayers, white or black.

Let's remember that his dad was a Major League ballplayer himself. Barry grew up in good neighborhoods, always had the best things to play with/train on, he always had the cars, the money and all that...

Today, every pitch is thrown using a very clean ball. Balls generally get tossed out of the game after getting hit against a wall or even fouled into the dirt. This might sound inconsequential, but I would think this has had at least as much of an impact on the game of baseball over the years as the advent of night baseball has.

Not to mention the fact that a significant number of pitchers were 'doctoring' the ball in any number of ways during the Ruth era. Hey, when they expected you to Go-9 and your arm is tired, what would you expect?
