Today, every pitch is thrown using a very clean ball. Balls generally get tossed out of the game after getting hit against a wall or even fouled into the dirt. This might sound inconsequential, but I would think this has had at least as much of an impact on the game of baseball over the years as the advent of night baseball has.

Not to mention the fact that a significant number of pitchers were 'doctoring' the ball in any number of ways during the Ruth era. Hey, when they expected you to Go-9 and your arm is tired, what would you expect?

Let's also remember that just as many if not MORE pitchers have been roiding as hitters.

But you don't see very many pitchers reaching near records that are held dear. Like Nolan Ryan's strikeout record is virtually untouchable, Cy Young's wins record will NEVER be approached, much less eclipsed (there may not be very many more 300 win pitchers either, unless Mike Mussina or Tom Glavine figure out a way to get there, Glavine having the upper hand there perhaps)....
