If Ted Williams didn't go off to fly planes for the Marines in wars he might have hit a thousand home runs. We'll never know.

Yeah we do. 1,000 is a bit much. He would have easily eclipsed the 600 homer mark (he ended up with 521)...if you look at it, he missed 3 full seasons and most of a 4th season (1952) and part of a 5th (1953). His per year average for number of home runs hit is 27.4 something. He would have ended his career with something in the neighborhood of 650-670 homeruns. To expect anything more wouldn't be fair to him.
