The Republican party is in disarray, but I can't understand those who just want to toss the whole thing and suffer through years of DUmmie victories to Teach A Lesson. (To who, the Republicans who will be thrown out and go on to lucrative private sector jobs?)
There is PLENTY of time to change this situation, and whining and "tossing them out" so the Dems get in isn't the way. The way is by pressuring our elected officials and pushing for conservatives to win primaries.
The party is in far better shape than the Dems because the changes we make as indicated by this piece will appeal to our base. The changes the Dems have to make to become a party of rationality would alienated so many of their hodgepodge coalition that it would shatter.
We can get our party back on track by working in that direction, not venting and howling. Just look at how far the Dems have to go to get on track, and you'll see how we are so much closer to re-energizing the party than they could ever be...unless they fake out the American public and get them to believe they're REALY moderates or even conservative, like Mrs. Family Values is attempting to do.

Like the 1950's ... and it would start all over again .. the relatively harmless, rebelious youth .. and because it would happen in the 2000 somethings .. it would become a police starte ... I'm afraid America is screwed .. we had a chance ... but it's gone ... the best we can do is slow down the decline.

Even if we were to break with the Republican party, we'd still need to allie ourselves with them to win elections. That's the hard facts in this situation. The trick is to keep an open debate on conservative concerns and educate the great unwashed.
Thus the birth of FreeRepublic. We may be disgusted with invertebrate Republicans, but we can't let them continue to fall either. We need to reach out and lead them.
As far as the rats, hang 'em.

What would a conservative Republican Party look like?Based on the comments on this thread, I'd have to say conservatism is not a big issue for a large number of Freepers.

Nice hypothetical.
Since it will never happen, why bother?
One party systems (which is what we have by the defacto abandonment of "The Game" by the bankrupt Demoscats.) almost always becomes a haven for all persuasions, being the only game in town.
{Are you "getting any of this"? }
One-note Whackos have a hard time dealing with the realities of life in general, much less the confusion that attends to an egalitarian reality... control freaks are by nature "unfun folks" to be around.

It won't work because the big-business Republicans are too entrenched in the controlling apparatus of the Party, just as the wacko lib wing has control of the Democrats.
Unless and until conservatives of both parties unite in a 3rd party, they will continue to battle the opposition within their own respective parties. There are conservative Democrats, just as there are conservative Republicans. They are closer, in many instances, to the each other than to the opposition wing of their own parties.
Why should conservatives try to maintain? They will end up losing by doing so. In 08, the Dem wacko libs will choose their nominee and lib Hillary Clinton is the probable nominee, as she morphs into a 'conservative' CINO. The Pubs will choose a big-business, status quo candidate. Conservatives lose with either party -- unless a drastic revolution occurs in each of the major parties.

What would a conservative republican party look like? Thre would be more men like Duncan Hunter and fewer pansies like Adam Schiff and Chris Shays. Next Question.

No "Holy Grail" theory of conservatism, if one exists, would ever describe a specific platform.
Part of the problem of presenting ourselves is just that: we are not so pretentious, vain, and conceited as to push our own principles on others. That in itself is noble, but also exploitable by our enemies.

Both major parties are controlled by big government supporters advocating foreign entanglements through military action and trade deals.
If a voter wants a conservative American government, always vote for gridlock.

A lot smaller.
1. Many Republicans are not conservative.
2. Many conservatives don't agree on what conservative is - we disagree on when the power of the government should be used legislating morality and foreign intervention for example.

The strife we are seeing here will never end for as long as we insist on having only two political parties, Pepsi and Coke, and disdain the very idea of multiple parties, such as those in all European countries and Israel, which gather people around a set of principles, emerge and win elections as one did in Israel this year. By their definition our political parties are coalitions, where compromise is built into each party's internals, as opposed to European style compromises and coalitions among parties. Each of our parties is 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 parties with the halves pretty much in agreement (liberal Pubbies, conservative RATS.) Break the duopoly, break the Coke vs Pepsi habit and complacency among the voters and you'll have a healthy political system where ideas not only matter but are put in practice. Otherwise, it's milquetoast all the way.
