One party systems (which is what we have by the defacto abandonment of "The Game" by the bankrupt Demoscats.) almost always becomes a haven for all persuasions, being the only game in town.

One-note Whackos have a hard time dealing with the realities of life in general,much less the confusion that attends to an egalitarian reality... control freaks are by nature "unfun folks" to be around.

The one advantage the Democrats have over Republicans is greater unity of purpose. Most of them are far-left on most issues.
Unfortunately, we have what I call "cafeteria conservatives" in the GOP. These people are conservatives when it benefits them to be conservatives. For example, they are fiscal conservatives because it benefits them financially, but not social conservatives. There are Republicans opposed to illegal immigration, again because they benefit financially.
Then we have "compassionate conservatives" (and I'm not just talking about Bush) that often desire to appease their enemies more than their base.
There's no easy solution.
