IRVINE, California (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Monday he doubted a "massive deportation" of foreigners living illegally in the United States would solve the country's immigration woes, as he tried to revive prospects for an election-year agreement in the divided U.S. Congress.

Senators returned to Washington on Monday from a two-week recess after Democrats and Republicans were unable to reach a compromise on what to do about an estimated 11.5 million to 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.

Republicans are going to lose bigger than hell over this

The GOP seems utterly oblivious to that fact that A) they have no chance whatsoever of winning over millions of welfare-seeking (or already welfare-addicted) illegals, many of whom believe that the U.S. is Mexican property, and B) their traditional/patriotic/conservative base is taking a hard look at other (third party / Ind.) voting options.

The establishment GOP's stance on illegal immigration is a lose-lose propostion for them. ....and for the country.

That isn't exactly what he said. He is concerned that the proposed deportation would be significantly expensive, which with a $9 trillion debt at present is not to be lightly undertaken.

In related news, Bush's approval ratings hit a new low...Nah, there can't be a correlation there.

How do we know it won't work? Mr. President, we aren't even ENFORCING our immigration laws and the joke is you want amnesty a la a guest worker program BEFORE enforcement! You must think the American people are stupid. We've tried amnesty before sir and it hasn't worked. Your NOT enforcing our laws, sir, I submit, is the problem!

Hey...let's round up all Irish living in Boston and NYC and send them back to Ireland.

Is that OK with you?

I'd much rather secure the border first and review the IRS information to pass-out felonies on all the illegals using false docoumentation. Then gives those individuals a free trip to Mexico. Clearly no-one can complain about doing this to people whom stole indentities...and sorry, you're not eligible for legal immigration, ever.

He has figured out he needs $240 billion to enforce this law this year. Since Congress has refused to consider the funding, he can do little but continue to examine options.

"Hey...let's round up all Irish living in Boston and NYC and send them back to Ireland."

You think they're illegal aliens? I suspect they came through proper channels, myself.

Are the Irish in question here illegally? If yes, then you're damn right it's ok with me. But I suspect you're talking about legal Americans of Irish ancestry, in which case the answer would obviously be no.

Seems you're having a difficult time grasping the difference between legal and illegal.

I am voting third party in 2006 to teach a lesson for 2008.

Why should Republicans care what you think? You are openly working for another party.

But I'm sure that you will agree with your new party's platform 100%, after all, how can you find anything in the Constitution to disagree with?

It seems they think they can fool us one more time and that we'll have to go along with them "because the Dems are so much worse". Well, screw that!

The Irish are here legally. They came through Ellis Island. The illegal immigrants' name explains exactly their status and how they came onto U.S. soil. This is how they came here-illegally. They are lawbreakers. The Irish-U.S. citizens.

"Most illegals living here are not committing crimes either."

You can't prove that in this neck of the woods where a brand new prison which is undergoing it's second extension already (it was originally built 5 years ago)is overflowing with illegal aliens who are hard core criminals.

If you disagree with the prevailing view, is it the standard answer to call them a "troll" or ignore them?

Pretty much. It's like blood in the water sometimes. I expect you got your post pulled, too. If not, maybe things have calmed down a bit.

Seems to me that we have to start first with border security, and a fence is an essential component of that.

I dislike the idea of a fence or wall, but every way I come at this issue leads to either this or open borders.

Bush is looking at the potential voter base these 20-30 million will add to the republican party. Remember, somewhere around 100 to 110 million voted in 2004 with the republican margin being only in the single digits.

Add another 20% loyal voters to that and elections are a lock.

I think he's a bastard for doing it.

elections aren't a "lock" if he has lost his base
