America in the eyes of Chinese people (Official Chinese paper)

How the ordinary Chinese people see America? Upon the occasion that Chinese President Hu Jintao is in America for a state visit, People's Daily has interviewed some Chinese citizens on their impression on the United States.

Interesting to see what they chose to publish as representative of the "People's" views of us. Common thread? We are overbearing & irresponsible. I have a relative in Taiwan, and am sick of our corporations kowtowing to these monsters. They are still monsters. Some have gotten rich, and many are becoming middle class, but their govt is still evil.

Opinions our Government/MSM care about: illegal immigrants, terrorists, newspapers from oppressive societies, scientists that disagree with pop culture theories and "unbiased" communist college professors.

Opinions our Government/MSM doesn't care about: tax payers, people who have religious opinions, people who love this country too much and voters.

It's too bad the Chinese aren't hunting Osama bin Ladin....

I just thought it a window on the Chinese govt's opinions of us. I remember vividly when they allowed our Ambassador to be surrounded by howling mobs, tossing rocks at our Embassy. I also remember their crashing into our spy plane, holding our men hostage, then SLOWLY returning the plane to us. I hope the President doesn't forget all of this. It does seem many in his Administration do, but there's always that darned State Dept (which can't be trusted).

None of those quotes have the sniff of being real. Instead, all have the sniff of manufactured quotes by Chinese press flunkies who speak and write English. There are no problems with the English, and words are used that people in those professions would probably not use in common speech.

I conclude that the article is a fraud, ginned up to suit the needs of the Chinese government while Hu is in town.

I saw nothing too offensive. After reading your comments I expected some real raging rants. Did not see this at all.
The government there (indefensible) will change as they prosper but they are still commies and hard for them to give up the control.

The comments are more subdued than I was expecting. Given that this is the People's Daily, no doubt they were carefully selected to advance the party line, and to demonstrate the correct way for Chinese to think about relations with America. For now, the message seems to be "We will have good relations with America. We can learn from America. But China is a rising power and should be recognized as a peer rather than as a subordinate".

Don't know much about how Red Chinese feel about us but I just got back from Taiwan and they love Americans over there. I was treated like Royalty the whole time I was there.

Yeah, I'm just in a bad mood. It actually isn't too bad. Hu's been handing out contracts left & right. I remember what China said on 11/22/63 - absolutely horrible. Also that they allowed mocking videos of the 9/11 attacks to be sold on the streets. I still don't see any positive internal changes in China, or see any truly significant outward signs of change. I don't see the govt changing because of capitalism, without being pushed from inside. It's discouraging and enraging that our hi tech firms help in the repression.

Actually, I don't "remember" what the official statement was on 11/22/63, just from reading an old newspaper I have. They are more smooth now, but every once in a while, one of their generals threatens to nuke us. Not too thrilled with them.

I just returned from Beijing two weeks ago. This is so far from what you find in the average Chinaman. They want to be like America. They like American products, they respect our technology. They don't necessarily agree with our politics due to not having the exposure to our internal debates. The Iraq question was never at issue. The people knew that Saddam Hussein had violated the terms of the 1991 Gulf war peace agreement and thet the US was well within it's rights to hold Saddam accountableWonderful people overall and they understand the threat with Islam. They know fully well that they are infidels too.

China is what Japan was 20 years ago. A perceived economic threat, but in reality it is just a manufacturing center with little hope of making any technological strides to compete with the American engine of invention. They are hampered by a homogeneous society that prizes conformity, just like Japan and they also lack a simple alphabet which is helpful in expressing complex thought. We will remain the premier society as long as we allow individualism, reject PC socialism and collectivism and encourage eccentricities. Europe has the same problem save the alphabet. Look at 90% of the technological innovation in the last 50 years and it was produced here. You can't name any major innovation to come out of Europe, Japan or China in the last 50 years.

I'm sure they (Chinese) also remember Clintax's "accidental" bombing of their embassy during the illegal Kosovo conflict, perhaps one of the only things Willy got right.
