You're not even sharing the name of both suppliers?

Anything but vegetarian is edible, although even vegetarian MREs will make a turd.

All MREs will however slow down that particular process.

I understand that it is important to look for genuine military issue, as those made for civilian use are of lesser quality.

I recall from the Gulf War I that French MRE's were reputed to be of quality, in that there was a favorable barter exchange rate with American MRE's. It would be interesting to obtain MRE's from other countries, especially those whose culinary tradition exceeds their military reputation.

MRE, also known as:

Meal, Rejected By Ethiopia
Meal, Refusing to Exit
Meal, Ready to Expel

And which one is best? I was always partial to Chicken Ala Chunk, myself.

My son who is not a vegetarian prefers the vegetarian MRE. But he also likes them cold.

Among the medics, we used to say:

An MRE is three lies:

It is not a meal, it is not ready, and it should not be eaten.

I was active during Reagan's Army and the switch from the cool kits with the P-39s. I kept one of them with my dogtags (under the plastic ID tag covers) until 1989.

For what is is worth, my favorite was the tuna cassorole with a good amount of salt and red sauce. It was a least favorite with others and always easy to trade for.

Anybodt wanna trade my cheesespread for some apple jelly?

www.longlifefood.com

I have always gotten first rate product there - and the MRE's of today are much better than those of even 10 years ago...

Around 10 years ago I was camping in Western N.C.

I happened to stop at a Wal-Mart near but West of Asheville. I noticed they had a bunch of freeze dried meals on clearance. I think they were Morton or something similar. Anyway, they weren't really cheap even half price so I decided to buy a few just to see how good they were.

They turned out to be extremely good but I have never seen them again.

Why bother with MREs? Take some cans of Spam, corned beef hash, beans, veggies, maybe some bags of rice or instant potatos, pasta and so on, put it all in a plastic container ready to be tossed in the trunk along with a camp stove if you have to evacuate and you'll eat better at less expense. Replace the 'emergency' food every so often and eat the old stock.

Ah. And a can opener.

They can all pretty much be made acceptable if you have enough packets of taco bell hot sauce on hand.

Do you still have to knread the peanut butter to mix it to look normal. cheese paks too?

In Iraq I was on the far end of the supply chain, so the chow hall food was little better than MRE's. After seven or eight months I lived almost exclusively on MRE's. I ate them all. The worst was Jaimacan something.
