I've been thinking of procuring some MREs as the hurricane/severe weather season approaches - and thought my fellow FReepers would be the best possible source of information.
It appears that there are two general options - the MRE pack from SOPAKCO - an example of which is here
The other supply seems to be assembled from contract overruns, for example the item at this link
It appears that MREs are more cost-effective than freeze dried items. I prefer to have an assembled meal instead of purchasing individual items. Also, I recognize that the Sopakco meals don't have heaters - but, those can be obtained elsewhere.
I realize that actual military MREs are available on eBay, but I hesitate to go there since I understand there are legal issues with purchasing them.
So, fellow FReepers - please share your wisdom with me. What should I look at?
You're not even sharing the name of both suppliers?
I recall from the Gulf War I that French MRE's were reputed to be of quality, in that there was a favorable barter exchange rate with American MRE's. It would be interesting to obtain MRE's from other countries, especially those whose culinary tradition exceeds their military reputation.
pork patties.
MMMMMMM
Look on e-Bay for Jenny Craig non-frozen meals. You can often get a really good deal in the auctions and the food is a heckuva lot better tasting than MREs.
Well, they're at the links. Still, the assembled kits are at Nitro-Pak.com, and the Sure-Pack meals (from Sopakco) can be had at Brigade Quartermasters. Of course, there are many vendors...
MRE, also known as:
Meal, Rejected By Ethiopia
Meal, Refusing to Exit
Meal, Ready to Expel
And which one is best? I was always partial to Chicken Ala Chunk, myself.
And I prefer Cs over MREs as well.
My son who is not a vegetarian prefers the vegetarian MRE. But he also likes them cold.
I am rather fond of the ham ones.
You are right about the C Rats.
Loved the peaches; I always got enough eggs and ham.
mmmmmm
The freeze dried strawberries, cocoa, m&m's, little bottles of tabasco sauce are good.
The Ham (armour ham) you can eat right out of the pack and is good.
Takes a while to get used to the peanut butter and crackers.
The other poster is correct about plugging you up.
But then - when you are in the field you dont want to.
The best one I ever had was my last one.
Check freepmail.
Tuna Caserole. YUMMMY!!
The Marines onboard my ship used to hook me up with MREs for keeping their air conditioning running so well in their racks.
Funny you should mention that. Years ago I tried a Mountain House mac & cheese - it was absolutely excellent. Significantly better than most restaurants, in fact. Alas, it has long been discontinued...
An MRE is three lies:
It is not a meal, it is not ready, and it should not be eaten.
I was active during Reagan's Army and the switch from the cool kits with the P-39s. I kept one of them with my dogtags (under the plastic ID tag covers) until 1989.
For what is is worth, my favorite was the tuna cassorole with a good amount of salt and red sauce. It was a least favorite with others and always easy to trade for.
Anybodt wanna trade my cheesespread for some apple jelly?
