2008 presidential hopeful George Allen urged his Senate colleagues on Sunday to "put the pedal to the metal" on immigration reform and "first and foremost, secure the borders."
"[For] the people out there in the real world . . . this is a hot issue," Sen. Allen told CBS's "Face the Nation." "I think the Senate needs to put the pedal to the metal, get moving, make decisions and first and foremost, secure the borders."
On some of the amnesty bills currently before Congress, Allen said: "We should not reward illegal behavior because all you'll get is more illegal behavior."
Asked if Republican-controlled Congress would "be hurt" by further inaction on illegal immigration, Allen said: "I think Republicans need to stand up for the rule of law. I think Republicans need to stand up for securing our borders. And I think Republicans - and all people - ought to look at history."
The Virginia GOP'er noted that in 1986, amnesty was provided to the 3 million illegals then in the country.
"Now we have approximately 11 million in the country illegally," he added. "Twenty years from now we're going to have 20 million.
"We need to do this right, do it properly and learn from history."
Hmmmm. Well, I may have to change my description to "almost" impeccable. Or, impeccable in the 21st century. That one goes back a ways, and I wonder if there's a reason for it.
So, are you on the Allen bandwagon, sinkspur?
ROFL...
I will vote for whomever the Republicans nominate. That includes McCain or Guliani, who, IMO, are the only two who would definitely beat any Democrat they ran against.
"how many senators will join him?? "
Good Question ... starting with his in-state colleague, it's dubious.
Since then, Allen has wised up to times. Like a true politician, Allen adjusted his voting to fit in line with what is necessary to get ahead in this party.

Well, what's the difference, then. Either way, you're guaranteed years of liberal governance.
I wrote and asked him why he voted against it.
Here is his reply.

Dear ______:
Thank you for contacting me regarding immigration reform. I appreciate you taking the time to share your views with me.
I share your concerns about illegal immigration. I believe we must strengthen control over our borders through increased manpower, new technology and smarter law enforcement coordination. Additionally, we must expand the number of detention facilities for those caught crossing the border illegally and increase penalties for those who smuggle illegal immigrants into the United States.
I oppose blanket amnesty for those currently here illegally, and I believe that our security depends on ending the current practice of turning a blind eye to the large number of illegal immigrants in our country today.
You specifically mentioned your concerns about my opposition to a bill that was approved by the House of Representatives in December. While I support the bills stated goal of strengthening our borders, without a reformed guest worker program it fell far short of the comprehensive solution that Central Washington and our nation needs.
To stop illegal immigration and fix our broken immigration system, we must strengthen our borders and create a legal channel for workers to come here and fill jobs that Americans are not. A functional guest worker program means our government decides who enters our country, where they are, when they must leave, and what rules they must follow.
As a top producer of labor-intensive agriculture products, our region is heavily dependent upon an immigration workforce. Without a legal channel for honest and hardworking individuals to fill these jobs, I am concerned that agriculture would be left with a serious worker shortage and our entire economy would be hurt. The United States would be at serious risk of losing our fresh fruit and vegetable production to foreign countries. Furthermore, the cost of construction and basic services would increase - raising prices for every American.
As the conversation about immigration reform continues in Congress, I will work toward a plan that meets our security and economic needs. I look forward to voting for a final plan that addresses illegal immigration in a comprehensive manner.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to contact me again in the future on any matter of importance to you.
Sincerely, Doc Hastings, Member of Congress
As you can see he is for pumping a lot of money into MORE Detention Centers. No mention of building high fences/walls to keep them out in the first place. He is also chanting the same mantra as some. No Americans will do this kind of work.
I think his real reason for voting NAY was fear he would lose the votes from all the illegals in this district.
Some might think your way was an even surer way of governance taking a rather decisive turn to the Left. One must know the market, before fashioning the ad campaign, and if your views don't fit the market, one must know how to effect the rather more difficult task, of changing the market. There are very few politicians that can achieve the latter. There just aren't.
I view it as a pointless waste of taxpayer money to detain or otherwise incarcerate illegal aliens who have broken no other law than crossing the border. Send the illegals back and build a barricade.
At most, it says that Allen wants a review of Roe v. Wade to account for modern scientific studies on life (which he believes have determined the right to life to begin at viability or brainwaves). He supports waiting for the courts to grant the states "more discretion" in restricting abortion.
It's telling that Allen doesn't come out and say the Roe should be completely overturned.
His lukewarmness makes me want to vomit.
Dear sinkspur,
"That includes McCain or Guliani,..."
If Mr. Giuliani is nominated, then social conservatives have already lost the election. I would not ever vote for Mr. Giuliani for president.
I suspect neither would a significant part of the social conservative segment of the Republican coalition.
Mr. Giuliani can't win the presidency as the Republican nominee.
Now, if he switched back to the Dems and took Hillary on in the primaries...
sitetest
Uh-huh. Everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) is to the left of a Keyster.
That is a quote of myself. I composed it just for your reading pleasure. :) What I was saying, was that was what one would expect a prime time candidate to say, with Allen's views, as opposed to what he actually said.
So, in your eyes, 'surrender is the path to victory'! ;-)
The polls show Rudy or McCain can secure the nomination without the support of 75% of the posters on this site. In the General, the loss of the some of the conservative is "base," is more than made up for by a huge margin, with the votes of moderate independents and Dems, who voted for Gore and Kerry, mostly because of social issues.
An 'X' in the P column indicates a vote where a Representatives vote differs from the vote of the majority of their Party.
