RUMSFELD ASKED TO DENY FUNDS TO CALIFORNIA COLLEGE

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld should withhold federal funds from a California college given the failure of the college to ensure the safe presence of military recruiters on campus, the Secretary was advised by a public interest law firm in a letter released today.
According to news reports, military recruiters were forced to flee yesterday from a University of California Santa Cruz job fair because of a raucous mob.
Mountain States Legal Foundation advised Rumsfeld that the colleges actions violate the Solomon Amendment, which requires that colleges permit military recruiters on campus or lose all federal funds.
UC Santa Cruz received $80 million in federal funds during 2005.
A unanimous Supreme Court ruled the Solomon Amendment constitutional early last month.
It is outrageous that members of the Armed Forces, who are asked to serve in harms way in Afghanistan and Iraq, are driven from a campus by a mob in America, said William Perry Pendley, president and chief legal officer of Mountain States Legal Foundation.
Unless Secretary Rumsfeld responds to this craven violation of federal law, radicals on other campuses will be emboldened, will endanger the lives of men and women in uniform, and will deny students the right to learn how they may serve their country.

Thanks. I read the reports yesterday.
My point is that the school did not prohibit the recruiters - the recruiters chose to leave during the protest.
The school needs to find a way to protect the recruiters while still upholding the right of the students to protest.

Exactly, especially after reading post #16. UCal knew it before hand and let the mob control the situation.

If terrorist can recruit?
Reads as though they , the terrorist, have completed their recruiting on this campus.
Hold the funding, this will get their attention real fast.

Mountain States Legal Foundation advised Rumsfeld that the colleges actions violate the Solomon Amendment, which requires that colleges permit military recruiters on campus or lose all federal funds. In the first place I don't think that the funding comes from the Defense Department so I doubt Rumsfeld could cut off the federal dollars even if he would. Second, the college allowed the recruiters on campus as required by the Solomon Amendment. I think you would have to show that they aided the bozos who harassed the recruiters until they left.

You are correct.
I wonder how hard the school tried to protect the recruiters. It looks like a very minimal effort. The school should try harder.
And the money should be cut off until the school gets enough protection to allow the recruiters to be on campus safely.

They might start by hoiring cops who know something about riot control. Not every flatfoot can so this job, just as not everyone can handle traffic jams.

Leave it to the peons?
We have left it to the peons for five years, they don't have the spine to with hold the funding, their too busy playing the old game of indolent pleasures.

Since when does the left worry about the law, or getting busted for it? I will give the Hispanic demonstators in Dallas credit for doing it right, but then most of them are not leftists--yet.

Withholding federal funds is not in Rumsfeld's job description.
But he could mention the lack of free speech on college campuses at his next press conference.
We should express our concerns to our local congress or senate reps...to start.

It doesn't matter what you think. What matters is how the law is written:

Yes, Rumsfeld needs to demand enforcement, or none will occur.

[Losing $80 million in federal funds should get the attention of the anti-war crowd in a hurry, and college presidents. ]
If they lost $80 million in federal funds, they would have to ask the illegal aliens to pay for their own tuition... Or increase the tuition on the rich liberal kids.

The administration should make an immediate verbal statement and then follow up with action.
Actually start the process to cuting off the federal money.
Send the University a formal notice, hold a hearing, what ever it takes.

If terrorist can recruit at California Colleges,
then our military should be allowed to recruit, too.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////
No. Our military is not "allowed" to recruit, they are required to do so. We are all volunteer, these misguided clowns are still acting like there is a draft, and recruiting is "optional". Actually the Military has a right to recruit anywhere in this sovereign nation, even a Church or a mosque. Our military chooses not to disrespect the sanctity of the religious houses of worship.
Terrorists, on the other had are not permitted or allowed to recruit anywhere. Even though it has been documented that much of their real recruiting is carried out in mosques. But of course, to the terrorist murder is scared, just read the transcript from flight 93 and hear the words.......Allah Akbar! and "There is no God but Allah", and this becomes clear.
