Chavez turns to Iran on military, uranium
Washington Times ^ | April 10, 2006 | Rowan Scarborough

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is seeking to deepen ties with Iran, with discussions on holding joint military exercises and obtaining uranium, according to Bush administration officials.

Hamas also is talking to Caracas about sending representatives to Venezuela to raise money for the militant group's newly elected Palestinian government.

But relations with another ally, Russia, have soured over a deal in which Moscow is selling 100,000 AK-47s to Venezuela. The South American country was counting on receiving new rifles, but Russia has shipped a number of refurbished models, prompting Caracas to halt the deal, the U.S. sources said.

Mr. Chavez's continuing efforts to cozy up to Iran are of increasing concern inside the Pentagon and State Department.

Mr. Chavez yesterday threatened to expel the U.S. ambassador, after accusing the diplomat of provoking tensions, according to reporters in Caracas. The threat came two days after pro-Chavez demonstrators tossed eggs, fruit and vegetables at Ambassador William Brownfield's car and the State Department warned Venezuela that it faced consequences if it did not protect the U.S. envoy.

The Washington Times reported in October that the Chavez government had made overtures to Iran about obtaining nuclear technology. The U.S. and European allies are now trying to force Tehran to give up its stated ambition to enrich uranium, a possible first step to building nuclear weapons.

U.S. officials told The Times that talks now include discussions on Venezuela's obtaining uranium for what is feared to be a fledgling nuclear program in Caracas.

"Hugo Chavez has been clearly talking to Iran about uranium," said a senior administration official, who asked not to be named.

Chavez had better watch his back. Making deals with terror groups is not a good idea these days.

Ping for Hugo

Chavez is getting in deeper and deeper with this kind of stuff. It's clear he is not a student of history, he should have learned from his cohort Castro about the US and nuclear weapons in our hemisphere.

He thinks he's a big shot but so did Castro and his oil isn't going to save his sorry rear end.

Apparently their arms dealers still have not found a legitimate lifestyle.

With Russia arming Venezuela and Iran with weapon systems that will eventually be used against us, I see no reason to trust them.

why dont we assasinate these tin pot dictators? We need to start doing that, it would really save us some time and effort down the road of having to invade. I guess we have to test our weapons every few years anyway..

Their weapons systems are not completely up to date, perhaps? Remember when they threatened to supply the Serbs with the latest anti-aircraft systems, because we were flying right through the existing ones. They never came across and I suspect it was partly because they knew their latest systems wouldn't do much better.

Russia's in it for the quick buck. Same with their relationship with Iran.

Putin knows these systems are going up in smoke....might as well pocket the cash.

He's engaging in bare knuckles profiteering.

Venezuela already owns Citgo; I wonder if it will occur to them that they could easily buy Winchester also:

One hundred eighty-six employees of the United States Repeating Arms Company plant located in New Haven, Connecticut, were thanked for their work on Friday, two days after the facility stopped all manufacturing activity, said Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo, a spokesperson for the city government.

She told Agene[sic] France-Presse that the mayor's office has been searching for an investor, who would take over the plant, but has to overcome several obstacles on the way to achieving this goal. (April 3rd edition of the South Africa Mail & Globe "Winchester rifle may have fired last shot")

Russia knows these Commie and Islamofacist countries are lusting for weapons. Why not sell off your old used stocks for a profit?

I wish others would wake up to this reality. Putin is not only arming America's most diabolical enemies, he is one.

Chavez wants to have joint military exersizes with Iran? LMAO!

That's a long ways to row your rowboats Chavez! Your "navy" bean pickers armed with refurbished Chinese knock off ak47's, will look even more pathetic than Iran's so called "navy". At least the mental Mullah's have outboard motors on their rubber rafts.

And just would Chavez do with Uranium? Nobody in his country has any more than a grade 3 education, including Chavez himself.

Chavez is desperate to get his @ss kicked by Americans, It's probably the only way he can get the people in his country to forget about the crappy job he is doing running the country.

Maybe we should turn off Chavez's oil taps, his only source of income, and make him stand in the corner a while. His people will wake up and string him up eventually.

Chavez has been interested in nuke tech for some time:

If I had to guess in 5-10 years we are going to have a nuke crisis down there if he is not removed.
