NEWARK, N.J. -- The men both stood in a busy hardware store parking lot, but their lives were far apart.
On one end, Oscar Bautista of El Salvador said he had been waiting more than three hours for a job. Across the lot, Art Jackson loaded potting soil into his Dodge Durango. He complained that immigrants are making it harder for Americans to keep good jobs, especially blacks.
''You need to take care of home first,'' said Jackson, an African-American phone salesman from northern New Jersey.
Blacks and Latinos are often united on social and political issues. But they often differ when it comes to immigration.
Newcomers make black progress harder, said Wesley Crawford, who works at Source of Knowledge, a bookstore in Newark. ''It's a misconception that they're taking jobs we don't want. If you give people a good job, they will work.''
While Hispanic immigrants have protested a proposed crackdown on illegal immigration, the nation's most prominent black leaders have all been to New Orleans to try to stop the upcoming local election. Shortly after the storm, Jesse Jackson and others complained that Latino workers seemed to have more access than blacks to rebuilding jobs.
Bruce S. Gordon, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said that African-American and Latino bonds are strong and that his ''spirit was there'' at the immigration marches.
Most of the immigration protests have focused on a bill passed by the U.S. House that would make illegal immigration a felony, and all but one black voting member of Congress, Rep. Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee, was against it, according to the Congressional Black Caucus.
Still, many blacks feel threatened, said Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a black writer in Los Angeles.
''The civil rights leaders say we're all united, but the average person on the street is taking great offense at this group coming in and essentially taking over,'' he said.

According to Jesse Jackson, I see there is excellent money in that line of work.
From what I've heard from the Black guys around here, they hate Asians even more. They are convinced the Asians are doing better ( even as recent immigrants) than they are because the government gives Asians all the money.
The children of the Vietnam War refugees are gathering most of the academic honors in the area schools too.
Great point about the Haitians. As black as night (and I mean that in a good way), but hardworking. So its not a race issue, it is a cultural one.

Not necessarily so. Many years ago when I worked at the IRS National Headquarters in D.C., I rode to a meeting in Philadelphia with two black female IRS employees. Both of these women had long since achieved the "Peter Principle" and exceeded their imcompetence levels; they spent the entire trip griping about how Koreans had taken over ownership of the fast food outlets and the dry cleaning establishments. Sadly, these two twits couldn't have run any kind of establishment, but they were, like the Jeffersons, "movin' on up" in the IRS hierarchy.
Three major problems with the IRS (not necessarily in this order):
Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
Senior Executive Service (SES)
National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU)
"I like to be in America!"
"I'll take what's free in America!"
"Don't want in me what's America!"
"Just let me be in America."

No surprise to me. At the company I used to work at there was a Vietnamese expatriate, now a LEGAL immigrant, who almost always had a big grin on his face-happy to be alive. At least one reason for his attitude was that he was an army officer during the Vietnam War and, as such, suffered "re-education" after the fall. He was an absolute dynamo, always willing to help with whatever problem was at hand.
This town's only big enough for one victim.......
Come over to the right side - there's plenty of room for you here, and your lives will be better for it.

I am so sick of this crud about being victims. More than enough time, money, incentives and handouts have been given out to help. Nothing going on today has ANYTHING to do with slavery. It's a cop-out.
Every other culture has managed to come here and succeed pretty well little or no help. Only one still has "problems".

There are huge class differences between the legals and the illegals. The average education level is 8th grade for the illegals.
No need to trouble yourself in Detroit. Your vote(s) will be cast for you, until the desired result is obtained. In fact, The Mayor of Detroit, Hizzoner Hisself says there are at least 150,000 completely bogus registrations in Detroit!
