But I never heard of that happening with a gasoline-fueled arson. Gasoline goes "WHOOOSH!" when it goes up. Natural gas goes "BOOM!"

Did anyone say it was gasoline in the gas can, or are we all just assuming it was?

Gas in a gasoline can will NOT explode.

Gasoline vapors can flash in a confined container, (and flash so rapidly that it seems like an explosion, but isn't - kind of like smokeless powder) but liquid gasoline cannot flash. Gotta have the correct concentration - not too little and not too much. That's why all the fuss about carburetors . . .

Stupid arsonists get caught in their own fires because they forget about the flash properties of gasoline vapor -- when they strike that match on the front porch and they can smell gasoline, they're standing in a vapor cloud. Sometimes it's just the right mixture, and then you get what is known in the trade as a "Crispy Critter."

Gallows humor but true.

There was a gas can:

"A customer entered the washroom and noticed the smell of gasoline coming from the stall, Cole said. The customer then saw the gasoline can and fled the washroom only moments before the explosion, he said."

Still no name? Could it be used as part of a bomb. Witnesses said he was wired.

"I wonder how many ran out with their dougnuts in hand?

Or with a trayfull of dognuts! And the coffee.

Now we find out there was gasoline involved. So this guy is an idiot in another way. There are some chemicals added to gasoline or kerosine to make it blow up in movies. One may be methyl ethyl ketone. The other will remain unknown for a reason. The 1st is unstable as it is.

There are over 300,000 chemicals to add as an attempt to catylise it. Let's see how many idiots try this at home! They won't be around to blow places up. There is also a 4th chemical that also will not get mentioned.

The explosives professionals that do this are licensed and very highly paid for a first time success. So with the other 2 variables, we have a 300,000^2 situation where it's 9.0 x 10^10 : 1 for success.

Will run out of Darwin Award winners.

Suppose maybe he was planting the device and it went off prematurely?

or. . .perhaps he just needed a bathroom visit or wanted to check his 'stuff' before(or after. . .) he enjoyed his last donut. . .before heading to underground train. . .

UPDATE:

Tims blast ruled suicide

TORONTO (CP) — The explosion that killed a man inside the bathroom of a downtown Tim Hortons on Sunday was a suicide, police sources said Tuesday.

The man — whose identity has not been released — walked into the coffee shop around 1 p.m. armed with a small gas container. Inside the bathroom, he poured gas over his body and lit himself on fire.

Police believe they know who the man is but are not releasing his identity as they have had difficulty notifying his next of kin. His immediate family is believed to be out of the country.

Because he was burned extensively, Dr. Jim Cairns, Ontario’s deputy chief coroner, said dental records or DNA analysis will be required to formally identify the man.

"We’re not dealing with any criminal activity here," Cairns said.

Police have been in contact with a distant relative in the city, but have not been able to reach the man’s wife. Unhappy in Canada, she and the couple’s young child returned recently to South Asia, a source said.(snip)

But, at the request of the family, his name will not be released.

Yup - we likely won't find out. Isn't this nice, though? If my kids commit an illegal act that could kill scores of people, at my request nobody will know about it. Yeah, right. Not me. Wrong ethnicity.

- Yes, and see my post #550.
I think we've both got the SOP's for the Canadian police forces down pat. It's not that they're against freedom of information, it's just that giving out information might give rise to further questions and expectations about what they've accomplished in getting anywhere on a case. In other words, it's a way to avoid accountability.
With the tame Canadian media, they get away with it without question.
