Immigration is not the pox neo-Know Nothings make it out to be
The Jewish World Review ^ | 4/31/2006 | Tony Snow

Princeton University sociologist Douglas S. Massey reports that 62 percent of illegal immigrants pay income taxes (via withholding) and 66 percent contribute to Social Security. Forbes magazine notes that Mexican illegals aren't clogging up the social-services system: only 5 percent receive food stamps or unemployment assistance; 10 percent send kids to public schools.

Economist Larry Kudlow praises Hispanic entrepreneurship: "According to 2002 Census Bureau data, Hispanics are opening businesses at a rate three times faster than the national average. In addition, there were almost 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses generating $222 billion in revenue in 2002."

Total crime and property crime in California are half what they were in 1980; violent crime has fallen more than a third. The state's Hispanic population during that time has increased 120 percent.

Well, I guess I haven't been mugged, but I resent seeing folks participate in the cash economy while I pay my share of payroll tax and income tax. I resent a situation where the politicos cater to what they see as a political bloc or potential bloc and allow the cost for educationg their children in other than English.

Think all those illegals in the marches thought maybe, just maybe, that bill came about because too many of them (and too quickly) disregarded our laws and sovereignty? Nah me neither.

The illegals in the marches were idiots. Or maybe they were Democratic Party operatives in disguise. They are trying to split the GOP and regain the Hispanic vote at the same time. And they are succeeding. I don't think your side realizes what a huge disaster this will be if they get away with it. But watch and learn, grasshoppers. Watch and learn.

"How can anyone know, first, how many illegals are here?"

That's funny.

On every other thread on the subject, everyone absolutely KNOWS that there are at least 20 million illegal aliens here.

According to this information more Hispanics are against amnesty than for it.....

Good. So am I. But I don't favor treating them like terrorists, felons, or even criminals either.

Everywhere fences have gone up illegal immigration has radically dropped. The can do both build the fence and enforce the laws. Then when they stop enforcing the laws (which will likely happen) the fence will still be there. Bush could have a liberal temporary guest worker program tomorrow if people trusted that enforcement would happen. They cant be trusted to enforce. Thats why a fence is necessary.

No one is asking to impeach our President.

Well, when you wake up and read the posts here, let me know.

Barf all you want on Tony Snow's column. It sure beats discussing the facts, right?

Illegal immigrants have no respect for private property.

"...but I resent seeing folks participate in the cash economy while I pay my share of payroll tax and income tax."

You have not figured it out yet, have you?

They're paying HUGE sums of money into the Federal coffers, and maintaining Social Security afloat.

You probably won't believe me, nor will you seriously look into what I just said.

Which is exactly what the Feds hope you do.

They'll give you a fence.

Panacea for the sans culotte.

Luis, coming from you that's one of the best compliments I've had this year.

"The can do both build the fence and enforce the laws."

Why don't they simply enforce the laws?

I didnt see many signs asking for temporary status by the way. They want citizenship. Willing to give it? If so call your elected officials and ask them to support one of the Dem bills.

They already have the largest, by far, number of legal immigrants to the US. How much more are you willing to give them? An open border?

Whatever you are talking about, it isn't mine for me to give them. Personally, I think that anyone who (1) is or will be self-supporting, (2) is not a criminal, and (3) doesn't have a contagious disease should be free to immigrate here. And anyone who wants to leave should be free to leave. This is part of what freedom means.

If we first truly secured the border, to the point where the flood of incoming illegals was brought down to a level that current enforcement could handle. Then if it was determined that we needed workers from other countries, then and only then would I support any new plan, law or program that allowed more people from other countries to come in to work or to live or gives legal status to those here now. And I would give priority for legal status in this country to those who are waiting in line because they are trying to follow the law, not to those here illegally.

I will not support any plan to legalize those here now or to allow more in legally until the border is secure. That is why I support a major fence/barrier on the border before any other plan is implemented. Without securing the border as step one, nothing else will work.

Illegal immigration is not the only issue that concerns me, I am concerned about the open border for other reasons also. I am deeply concerned that a terrorist could easily cross the border with little chance of getting caught. I am concerned that things such as biological weapons and dirty bombs can be smuggled in easily. I am also concerned about the border crime, including but not exclusive to drug smuggling. Illegals are only a part of the reason I want the border secured.

So youre for an open border. So instead of just shilling for an open border with mexico you should be working to take down the huge barriers to immigration in front of the rest of the world.
