Princeton University sociologist Douglas S. Massey reports that 62 percent of illegal immigrants pay income taxes (via withholding) and 66 percent contribute to Social Security. Forbes magazine notes that Mexican illegals aren't clogging up the social-services system: only 5 percent receive food stamps or unemployment assistance; 10 percent send kids to public schools.
Economist Larry Kudlow praises Hispanic entrepreneurship: "According to 2002 Census Bureau data, Hispanics are opening businesses at a rate three times faster than the national average. In addition, there were almost 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses generating $222 billion in revenue in 2002."
Total crime and property crime in California are half what they were in 1980; violent crime has fallen more than a third. The state's Hispanic population during that time has increased 120 percent.

You missed the point, you seem to be concerned with what percentage of illegals are in prison, most of us don't care what percentage of illegals are in prison of the total illegal population. The fact is illegals should not be here to begin with, so we don't want to spend any money on their incarceration. Therefor any money spent on illegals that are in prison is an amount we should not be spending. It would not matter to me if only a very small number of illegals by comparing to total illegal population were in prison- how ever many it is is too many.
Most illegals are still paid in cash under the table, or end up on a payroll using false documents. I know this for a fact, by knowing how many illegals in my area are paid. The most favored way of paying illegals in my area is to simply hand them cash- the second most favored way for those who need many workers is to have a labor contractor in the middle between the business owner and the illegal. That way if they are caught- the business owner did not hire them so he is in the clear. The business owner then gets a new labor contractor if the old one is busted.
Generalizations (most, many, a high percentage) that are not supported by a published supporting document, even a website, a nefarious. The common theme from W-2 wage slaves is that a 1099 contractor is the bad guy, because he cannot act in the unlawful capacity of a federal, state, and local tax enforcer. And he does not steal union dues right off of the top. Not what I was brought up to understand as a core conservative principle. But please carry on, I really am interested in hearing about how these illegals are going to be forced to pay for the Congressional largess with Social Security.

Hispanics still vote predominately Democrat, even in Texas. But the difference has gotten much smaller than it was 5-10 years ago. And this is no accident. Again, Hispanics tend to be culturally conservative, and they are are natural source of GOP votes. But you must either cultivate this source or risk losing it to the Democrats. The last thing I want to see is Texas turning into another California.
I think it's the typical red/blue effect -- the large population centers everywhere voted Democrat, and likely for the same reason: Democrats of all stripes tend to congregate there. California has been a magnet for lefties for a long time -- its legislature has been solidly Democrat-controlled for decades, so perhaps a better question might be: why did California continue to support Republicans until 1992?
Hell, no. Secure the border. It's not that hard to do. No reason citizens should have to prove their legitimacy to anyone.
If everyone outraged about this wanted to address the problem all they would have to do is make a citizens arrest.
No...I've seen no person on this thread say that we should have no immigration, period; that was the position of the know-nothings. My position on immigration is that I'm against unlimited and uncontrolled immigration, which is what we have now.
Surely you do not advocate unlimited and uncontrolled immigration, do you?

Nobody is expressing any sentiment such as you describe and your attempts to cloud the issue only serve to relocate you to that remote plane of existence occupied by the likes of Cindy Sheehan and Gael Murphy.
From the 1850's? It only lasted 2 years as I recall. A bit of a reach to justify 20 million criminal illegal aliens 150 years later.
As far as I am concerned, the Mexicans marching in the streets with Mexican flags and signs for Aztlan and similiar groups- and those that have burned and desecrated our flag have declared war on the US, whether everyone chooses to recognize it as that or not.
No, I understood your point. The problem was, your comment about the unreliability of the statistics presented by Tony Snow -- it was a good one -- also applies in the other direction: we can no more trust the statistics cited to show that illegal immigration is on balance "bad".
As to whether illegals "should not be here to begin with," I think it's clear that many Americans disagree, to the point that they're paying people to cross the borders. There is clearly a market for illegal immigrant labor.
The sticking point for you is the "illegal" part. Suppose, however, that a way was created for this large group of people to be here legally -- say, some sort of guest worker program that allows us to track and tax those who currently are not tracked and taxed. Would your argument about "they shouldn't be here" be addressed, or would you find some other reason to oppose their being here?
Its not to justify the illegals its to paint as racist anybody who opposes amnesty.
By the way, you do know that the Muslim religion is taking root and growing in Mexico- right?
