Boehner hints a back down on 'amnesty'

House Majority Leader John A. Boehner refused yesterday to rule out compromising with the Senate to expand the House border security bill to include a guest-worker program or provisions that opponents call "amnesty." "Let's wait and see what the Senate can produce," he told reporters yesterday when asked whether House Republicans would reject the Senate Judiciary Committee's proposal to allow the estimated 12 million illegal aliens now in the U.S. to seek citizenship after paying a fine.

1) We need to secure our borders.

2) We need to enforce and strengthen current immigration laws.

3) No Visa program sould allow people who are illegally inside the United States at the time of application to apply.

4) Immigration law should focus on the benefitting the United States, not on benefitting others. It is quite possible to benefit others while benefitting the US, however the primary concern is what is best for the US, not trying to solve the world's problems.

At least not before the 2006 elections. The RATs and RINOs need something to campaign on and will tell their constituents whatever they want to hear. If the group is anti, they will be anti; if the group is pro, they will be pro. There will be so much flip-flopping, you will think Kerry is running in every election.

Here we go again ... how long until "xenophobe," "fringe nativist" and "white trash" are trotted out again? Have you seen the polling on this? Way to go with all the slurs, during CAFTA, the Miers debacle, the ports mess and now that-which-we-shan't-call-amnesty.

We shouldn't jump to any conclusions. But it sounds like Boehner and Blunt are setting the stage for a compromise with the Senate that allows for a guest worker provision in any new immigration reform legislation. The Bush-McCain-Kennedy-Spector guest worker program proposal is nothing but backdoor amnesty. So much for US sovereignty, rule of law and fairplay with the legal immigration process.

And the immigration zealots are actually praying for total Democrat rule in this country by 2009. They think this will result in "Civil War 2" (as a certain person keeps promoting) or else it will result in the election of "true conservatives".

On March 26, hundreds of thousands of people flooded onto Los Angeles' streets to protest a bill currently passing through Congress. The House version of the bill strengthens legal consequences for those associated with illegal immigration: Knowingly assisting, encouraging, directing or inducing illegal immigrants to cross the border would be punishable by no less than three and no more than 20 years in prison, and/or a fine; knowingly hiring more than 10 illegal immigrants would be punishable by no more than five years in prison, and/or a fine; illegal immigration would be a felony; new border patrol agents would be trained; funding would be provided to construct a fence along one-third of the U.S./Mexico border.....

Only now, several decades too late, has Congress decided to act.

But better late than never. The stated purpose of the controversial bill is to curb terrorism. September 11 surely awakened us to the dangers of nonexistent border control....

These machinations are really only more of the same: Congress legislates, INS ignores. This is political pandering at its most cynical. These machinations are de facto nothings.

The GOP must not allow itself to be torn apart by de facto nothings.
The hispanic voter must not allow itself to be demagogued by de facto nothings.
The Right must not cede the hispanic vote to the Left.
The Right must not cede the hispanic vote to hillary clinton.

This isn't even the Senate version yet. It's the Judicary Committee's version. In my opinion it's a very bad bill.

Fortunately it has a long way to go to become law, and we need to push our representatives to fix or kill it and replace it with better legislation.

There's a lot of rhetoric being tossed around. Characterizing Boehner's comment as hinting at backing down is reading a lot into a short comment. I'm ntosure it's really helpful to the debate, though I do support the underlying message of keeping pressure on COngress to make sure they pass a law that addresses illegal immigration rahter than sweeping it under the table again and letting it get worse.

That's a little too close to actual currency for comfort. You might want to make it a lot more obvious that this is something other than a genuine $100 bill. With clueless clerks accepting $200.00 bills, somebody is going to successfully pass one of those things, and it might come back on you.

No bill would be better than the path to legalization for the illegals which just makes them pay $2000 in fines and puts them in front of all those who stayed in their home country and filled out the paperwork for the official legal slots available.

If you let the line-cutters get away with it, everybody will cut in line.

Are you actually suggesting that passing a bill that will ensure the GOP forfeits both houses of Congress-which it is already in danger of doing already-and gives amnesty to millions of illegal aliens is preferable to the status quo?

The status quo IS amnesty. Nothing is done to remove illegal immigrants so, de facto, they are here to stay.

If there is no bill this year (and it is looking increasingly as if there will not be), immigration reform will be dead for at least another three years.

One interesting anecdote I remember from the book I referenced above was a moment of Lee's humor on the retreat.

Gen. Wise had stopped to wash his face in a mud puddle one morning as Gen. Lee and his staff rode up. Wise stood up and wiped the water away from his eyes which left his face covered in a thin sheet of red mud. Lee said something to the effect of "General, I appreciate your enthusiasm despite our current situation but don't think war paint is going help".
