A French national was arrested after tossing a package over a White House gate, sparking a security alert, although the object was found to be harmless, the US Secret Service said.
Cyrille Mourotte, 36, who was arrested for "disorderly conduct" immediately after Wednesday's incident, had been arrested and deported following a similar occurrence in June 2004, Secret Service spokesman Jonathan Cherry said.
Mourotte is accused of tossing a package over a gate at the White House on Wednesday, causing security forces to call in a bomb squad and cordon off the surrounding area, Cherry said.
He would not specify the nature of the package but said it was not dangerous. The Washington Post reported Thursday that the object was a bundle of papers and plastic fastened with rubber bands.
The daily said Mourotte was to appear in Superior Court here for a hearing on Thursday.

A box of cheese? Stinky cheese?
It was a surrender note.
So he's very likely a felony illegal alien. I love it!
I smell something vichy!
(Not original and I apologize in advance to the freeper who originated this!)
Tom
What baffles me is that they hate us and our culture but can't wait to get here, how do you figure?
"What baffles me is that they hate us and our culture but can't wait to get here, how do you figure?"
Because we don't hate you or your culture, maybe ? I must have missed the goose-stepping crowds on the Champs-Elysées chanting "Death to America" and burning the US flags all these years...
Hang this French terrorist.
Wait a second, he did this before. Maybe he is only buying 1-way tickets and is looking for a free trip back.
Well said Atlantic Friend. The French government and the French people are different entities and we should remember that.
That said: I don't have a lot of respect for the French people at the moment. They think they should have jobs for life: for once their government knows better.
"Please feel welcome here, any and all times, Atlantic Friend."
How could I feel any different after such a friendly welcome, Bob! It's been a while I hadn't had the pleasure to read you on this here forum.
***It was a surrender note.***
LOL! And just think, it didn't do them any good to surrender to the Muslims and the students, so he's surrendering to us.
"Have there been any "brave" endeavors of the French lately? In recent years? In some long ago distant past perhaps?"
Let's see...Gee, I don't know, let's ask the French soldiers who have been deployed with their American comrades in arms' side to fight in WW1, WW2, the Korean War, Lebanon, Gulf War 1, ex-Yugoslavia, Somalia, Haiti, Afghanistan...
Or even better, we could ask this guy...if he hadn't been killed in the line of duty.

Well, at least he must know the US is civilized!
