I always like to point out the amazing coincidence of how Osama bin Laden left Sudan nearly broke and that Saddam Hussein was also nearly broke at the same time.

Then a couple years later with the Oil For Food program, both suddenly found themselves flush with cash.

Saddam had the oil and the corruptible United Nations running the Oil For Food program. Osama bin Laden had the financial network and supporters who could translate Saddam's vested interest in the oil for food program into money for both of them.

Thanks, jveritas.

Be assured not just us freepers are reading your important work here. The MSM and others of influence do use FR as an information outlet.

You won't get any credit later, but we know and you know. FR has been doing this sort of thing for years.

We are the media.

As per this, keep in mind that this was reported during the Clinton years and if the press were honest it would not have been "forgotten".

The association of Iraq and al Qaeda was cited in the Clinton administrations's indictment of bin Laden for the African Embassy bombings. The Iraqi-Sudan-al Qaeda association was not unreported either.

You are doing a fantastic job corroborating what was known and what in the past, the same press that denies any connection, reported prior to 911.

Almost three years ago I posted a review, here with the NY Times article and the US Indictment.

Other freepers have an even better inventory of articles or documents relating to the subject.

Iraq Tempts Bin Laden To Attack West

The Herald
By Ian Bruce
December 28, 1999

The world's most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, has been offered sanctuary in
Iraq if his worldwide terrorist network succeeds in carrying out a campaign of
high-profile attacks on the West over the next few weeks.

Intelligence sources say the Saudi dissident believed responsible for the
bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and a US military
barracks in Saudi Arabia in 1998, is running out of options for a safe haven.

He is now thought to have overcome his initial rejection of Saddam Hussein,
whom he regarded as an exploiter of the Islamic cause rather than a true
believer, and is considering the offer of a bolt-hole from which he can
continue to mastermind terrorism on a global scale.

A US counter-terrorist source said yesterday: "Our State Department issued a
worldwide warning on December 11. We have solid information that many of the
groups operating under bin Laden's patronage are planning 'spectaculars' to
coincide with the period leading up to and through the millennium
celebrations.

"They want to inflict maximum loss of life in return for publicity. Now we are
also facing the prospect of an unholy alliance between bin Laden and Saddam.
The implications are terrifying.

"...The approval of the Honorable Presidency was granted to meet with the opposition person Osama Bin Laden by the Apparatus according to letter 128 on 11/1/1995..."

In Baathist speak...isn't "apparatus" synonymous with the government?

Hmm. One would think the Administration would try and use these documents...why aren't they?

In any case...EXCELLENT JOB!

In the Pentagon/FMSO document ISGZ-2004-009247 there is a clear report about the relation between Iraq and Bin Laden that dated back to 1995. This document contains a 9 page report from the Iraqi Intelligence Apparatus and it is titled “The Saudi Opposition and Achieving the Relation and Contact With Them”. In the report they talk about there meeting with Osama Bin Laden and that Bin Laden in 1995 and how to establish relations wiht him. In the meeting Bin Laden asked the Iraqis for joint operations with them against the Foreign forces (US military) in the land of Hijaz (Saudia or Saudi Arabia).

Wow. I just made a sarcastic crack about this on the Levin thread. It's just a matter of time before these documents link Saddam to the bombing of the Khobar Towers once and for all. This document detailing a meeting you've translated took place immediately before that bombing. Let noone forget that the Khobar Towers housed US military personnel who patrolled the Iraq no-fly zone. And this meeting was about attacking the US interests in Saudi Arabia. Fascinating.
