SpongeBob on Brit Hume's Target List
The steady creep to the top for Brit Hume's nightly Special Report on Fox--not just the No.1 Washington-originated cable show but also the fourth in all basic cable at 6 p.m.--has the host eyeing the next victim. "We've been having a series of meetings here about how we can beat Nickelodeon," he says. "We just hope that they don't put SpongeBob SquarePants up against us." Fun aside, Hume's hourlong mix of news and debate now reaches 1.5 million nightly while dominating the key 25-to-54 age demographic. And it happened in a very un-Fox-like way: without fanfare, even though Hume has recently surged to the No. 2 spot among all cable news shows, after Bill O'Reilly.
When Special Report started in 1998, the goal was giving the growing Washington bureau some visibility. Now the top audience-getter of Washington shows, including CNN's Situation Room and MSNBC's Hardball, Hume says, "We kind of pinch ourselves." Like a good boss--Hume is the managing editor of the D.C. bureau--he credits his news team. But the "poisonous" mood in Washington doesn't hurt either. "For those who have a rooting interest in it," he says, "they want to hear about it."
While beating the pants off SpongeBob is a long-term goal, Hume has a more immediate worry: No. 12 ESPN's March Madness coverage. "If they've got games on at 6 at night," he frets, "that's gonna be tough."
The best news show on TV, at least since Rosanna Rosannadanna was on.
I do not watch Foz weekend window dressing blabber heads, puke!
Can't add much to the previous props. It is truly a fabulous program, and should be #1.
However, when Brit takes a day off, I wish Tony Snow would sit in on occasion. Jim Angle and Brian Wilson are good, but they're better reporters than anchors.
I like almost everything about it except when Brit feels the need to overly disect polls. Who cares.
Couldn't happen to a nicer and more deserving person. Way to go!!
That is such a perfect description. I love it.
I won't be able to watch him again without that descriptor coming to mind.
My favorite moments on their Sunday shows come when Brit calmly talks Juan through one of his liberal melt-downs. Juan gets into one of his liberal talking point frenzies and I don't think he realizes that the viewers are aware of the fact that he's loosing his cookies on the air. Then Brit, calmly says "Juan...........Juan..." and then, in crystal clear terms that even the libs can understand, he discredits everything Juan has just said. I wish I had Tivo'd some of them.
If the powers that be at CBS had any brains they would be trying to hire away Brit Hume for their open anchor spot instead of Perky Couric.
I dunno ... if they manage to get the Hoff on permanent retainer, this could mean some serious competition.
He overshadows the rest of them in logic and clear thinking to the point where, if I were one of them, I would feel like I brought a birthday candle to the 4th of July fireworks show.
Much of the stuff on Fox News is no longer worth watching (O'Reilly, Greta, most weekend stuff), but Special Report is the exception.
Wait a min'! How great can he be if he can't beat Sponge Bob (..)
bump to read after bedtimes
Naaa. I really like Greta say the same thing for one hour, six months in a row. Now THAT's entertaining and newsworthy.
Yup. All the blathering chatter stops when Charles speaks. I like that.
Best news show anywhere.
Brit's show is far and away the best. The only thing I enjoy more is the occasional spanking he gives the hapless Juan Williams on Chris Wallace's Sunday show. Yesterday's was a real stinger, and I think Juan still has the marks today!
Way to go, Brit!!
