SpongeBob on Brit Hume's Target List
The steady creep to the top for Brit Hume's nightly Special Report on Fox--not just the No.1 Washington-originated cable show but also the fourth in all basic cable at 6 p.m.--has the host eyeing the next victim. "We've been having a series of meetings here about how we can beat Nickelodeon," he says. "We just hope that they don't put SpongeBob SquarePants up against us." Fun aside, Hume's hourlong mix of news and debate now reaches 1.5 million nightly while dominating the key 25-to-54 age demographic. And it happened in a very un-Fox-like way: without fanfare, even though Hume has recently surged to the No. 2 spot among all cable news shows, after Bill O'Reilly.
When Special Report started in 1998, the goal was giving the growing Washington bureau some visibility. Now the top audience-getter of Washington shows, including CNN's Situation Room and MSNBC's Hardball, Hume says, "We kind of pinch ourselves." Like a good boss--Hume is the managing editor of the D.C. bureau--he credits his news team. But the "poisonous" mood in Washington doesn't hurt either. "For those who have a rooting interest in it," he says, "they want to hear about it."
While beating the pants off SpongeBob is a long-term goal, Hume has a more immediate worry: No. 12 ESPN's March Madness coverage. "If they've got games on at 6 at night," he frets, "that's gonna be tough."
Special Report is my favorite show on tv.
Special Report is the only news on TV I watch anymore. Period. The rest of Fox has joined the rest of the Dinosaur media on the unwatchable list. I'm glad Brit is finally getting the viewership he deserves. Maybe Foxnews will take notice and return to their "we report, you decide" roots.
Hands down, the best news show on TV anywhere, any time.
My favorite also. His All-Star Panel is fabulous - lovable old curmudgeons Fred and Mort, and even Mara is fairly tolerable. The panel is at its best, however, when the awesome Dr. Krauthammer is aboard.
Special Report is my favorite show on tv.
And mine as well. WOO HOO! I'm so happy to hear Brit and "Special Report" are doing well! :o)
WOO HOO! Way ta go, Brit! :o)
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.
I'll second everything you said!
Nice going Brit....listen to Special Report on XM every afternoon. Love the show.
Far and away the best news on TV. Brit is so quiet spoken and never hawking his products like O'Reilly. Hope he passes him soon.
Brit Hume for POTUS 2008.
Bill O'Reilly....news....gag!
If you're not familiar with Brit Hume's show... It is "Special Report" on the Fox News Channel. 6pm ET/3pm PT. Show repeats at 12 midnight ET/9pm PT.
IMHO, there is more substance packed into one hour of "Special Report" than there is during most other cable networks' entire 24-hour time period.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my miscellaneous ping list.
Gotta' love her, especially when she doesn't receive her liberal talking points and she makes that strange face upon hearing of some new liberal idiocy that has just happened.
I also get the impression the Mort Kondrake's "liberal shoes" just don't fit him anymore. He walks off their plantation on a regular basis.
Brit is second to The Factor? Maybe Fox will move Special Report into prime time. I'm always home too late to catch it and Brit would be a big improvement over H&C.
He an adult up against children like Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann .
He'd be great, no doubt, but like Rush - he'd have to take too big a pay cut ;-)
Yep! I like Fred and Charles. :)
I'm with you - when Dr. Krauthammer is on, I make sure I listen. Love him best when I watch Mara and others get a poke from Charles' red-hot logic.
