MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- Somali militiamen who skirmished with U.S. Navy vessels claimed Sunday they did not fire the first shot and that they had been patrolling Somali waters to stop illegal fishing vessels.
On Saturday, two U.S. Navy ships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia, killing one suspect and wounding five others. (Full story)
It said that the incident took place on international waters and the Navy had taken 12 suspects, including the wounded, into custody after the gunbattle.
Saleban Aadan Barqad, a spokesman for the militias, confirmed the casualties Sunday to The Associated Press.
He said that in total 27 Somali militiamen had been patrolling off the Somali coast before the gunbattle. Fourteen returned to shore safely, Barqad said on two-way radio from the central Somali town of Harardhere.
The militiamen, "were in an operation to protect the country's sea resources from illicit exploitation by foreign vessels," Barqad said............

The way the Bush WH has been giving in so much lately to the MSM I would suspect that from now on our navy ships will sail unarmed. I was so disappointed to hear on Laura Ingraham that the GITMO prisoners are actually treated nicely... I mean... Rush's Camp Gitmo Parody has become a reality! The philosohy is "We give them carrots and if they misbehave we can take a carrot or two away from them. That's the punnishment." No wonder the President's poll numbers are down. A shame. It really is. So, it wont surprise me if the next time we end up with another USS Cole incident.

My recollection of one account said the Navy fired after these "militiamen" pointed RPGs at them. If so, the militiamen are getting more education: Just point a weapon at the USN, and you're GONE. After the Cole, you don't get to shoot first!
The Navy made a big error. Instead of small arms and boarding, they should have just used the deck gun, that way the terrorists would not be alive to object.
