Ordinary Iraqi families getting ready to fight They're stockpiling weapons, food and fuel
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Wednesday, March 15, 2006 | Charles Levinson

Baghdad -- Om Hussein, wrapped in her black abaya, lists the contents of the family's walk-in storage closet: three 175-pound cases of rice, two 33-pound cases of cooking fat, six cases of canned tomatoes, three crates of assorted legumes, a one-month supply of drinking water, frozen chicken livers in the freezer. And in the garage, jerry cans filled with fuel are piled floor to ceiling.

Om Hussein, who was reluctant to give her full name, and her Shiite family are preparing for war. They've stocked up on food. They bought a Kalashnikov rifle and a second car -- so that there is space for all 13 members of their extended family should they need to flee in a hurry.

"We are afraid of what will happen in the coming days," she says. "Maybe there will be a monthlong curfew, or maybe fighting in the streets will force my family to stay in the house for days at a time."

In the past week, President Bush has tried to assure Americans that Iraq has stepped back from the brink of civil war. "Iraqis have shown the world they want a future of freedom and peace," he told the Foundation for Defense of Democracies on Monday.

Few Iraqis, however, share Bush's view that the crisis has been averted. They are readying themselves for the worst, fleeing likely flash points, stockpiling weapons and basic foodstuffs, barricading their neighborhoods, and drawing lines in the sand delineating Sunni and Shiite territory.

although they've been out and about for a month or so now, ever since that Mosque got blown up.

I haven't had the time to combat their stupidity until now :)

I Want my country back

Really? What would you like your country back from, Hawkiye in Virginia? Back from the mean ol' Bush administration?!? LOL

Look at the bright side, only 2.5 more years to go. Unless...

...ya know, since Bush "stole" Florida in 2000 he technically has only been elected once. So he can run again in 2008! Wooo hoooo!

One of you calls me Murtha and the other thinks I don't read newspapers. Sheesh!

Yes, after you post nonsense showing you don't keep up with daily activities very well.

Your whine here is equivalent to a stripper complaining about men staring at her breasts.

"...frozen chicken livers in the freezer..."

Years ago, I would go to a Mennonite food stand (in eastern Pennsylvania), buy a cup full of of fried chicken livers on Saturday afternoons, and chow down. I'm sure I can never convince you - but it was delicious.

Re: your tagline: "Please pray for peace in Iraq"

A couple of years ago, when I saw The Passion of the Christ, I was so inspired, I came here and made a lengthy post about how we should make a group prayer, and also envision the terrorists surrounded by white light, envision the anger dissolving and people beginning to have the strength to understand each other instead of carrying grudges, allowing Christ's love to pour into their hearts.

I got a few positive replies, from those I have pinged, and others whom I can't remember now.

Your tagline has reminded me to keep working on this.

I have also pinged trussell, who, IIRC, has a prayer ping list. If you think it's a good idea, trussell, please pass it on.

And please ping me if you do. :)

Sounds like the Y2K crowd around here

LOL! I was concerned about Y2K, but I put everything off (unlike some of my neighbors in Denver, who had plastic buckets full of dried beans, etc.)

So on December 30, I went to Safeway and grabbed everything I could, spending over $300.

On my way out, I ran into my friend who had first told me about Art Bell and Y2K. He saw my overflowing shopping cart and laughed. :)

We got up early on New Year's Eve to watch what was going on...when China and Russia made it with no problems, we knew it would be okay. On midnight, we ran around turning the lights in the house on and off, LOL!

People had a fantastic time--it was the best New Year's Ever. Everyone was in the street, so happy that the worst hadn't happened.

The way the media is praying for civil war in Iraq is absolutely despicable.
