Ordinary Iraqi families getting ready to fight They're stockpiling weapons, food and fuel
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Wednesday, March 15, 2006 | Charles Levinson

Baghdad -- Om Hussein, wrapped in her black abaya, lists the contents of the family's walk-in storage closet: three 175-pound cases of rice, two 33-pound cases of cooking fat, six cases of canned tomatoes, three crates of assorted legumes, a one-month supply of drinking water, frozen chicken livers in the freezer. And in the garage, jerry cans filled with fuel are piled floor to ceiling.

Om Hussein, who was reluctant to give her full name, and her Shiite family are preparing for war. They've stocked up on food. They bought a Kalashnikov rifle and a second car -- so that there is space for all 13 members of their extended family should they need to flee in a hurry.

"We are afraid of what will happen in the coming days," she says. "Maybe there will be a monthlong curfew, or maybe fighting in the streets will force my family to stay in the house for days at a time."

In the past week, President Bush has tried to assure Americans that Iraq has stepped back from the brink of civil war. "Iraqis have shown the world they want a future of freedom and peace," he told the Foundation for Defense of Democracies on Monday.

Few Iraqis, however, share Bush's view that the crisis has been averted. They are readying themselves for the worst, fleeing likely flash points, stockpiling weapons and basic foodstuffs, barricading their neighborhoods, and drawing lines in the sand delineating Sunni and Shiite territory.

looks like all hell is about to break loose over there. We will either have to crack down hard and level the hot spots like we should have done from the start or get the hell out and let them fight it out. Unfortunately I think we will do neither and continue to try and run things too PC.

FEMA and Homeland Security should hire this woman to give lessons on disaster preparedness.

Weapons prices have skyrocketed. A used Kalashnikov that sold for $100 before the Samarra bombing now sells for $150. The price for a 9mm Browning handgun has gone up from $800 to $1,200.

Pity they can't sell rifles mail order....At $150.00

That said, their actions seem prudent in my estimation. Everyone should have a little extra for unforseen events.

looks like all hell is about to break loose over there.

I'm just not seeing it.

What I'm seeing is the media getting hyperbolic about it, as usual.

Good post. I'd like to know more about Levinson. How long he's been in Iraq? Where he went to get the story and quotes? etc.

"Anyone who says this war has a solution is wrong," says Abdallah, his family's recent ordeal etched in sunken, blood shot eyes. "This is truly a civil war now. There is only hatred, envy and a blood-thirst for revenge."

Foreboding!

This could be interesting.

Peters, Ralph, LTC (Ret.), U.S. Army

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters talks about his recent trip in Iraq and media coverage of the war. He's currently a New York Post columnist who traveled to Kuwait & Iraq from Feb. 24 to March 7 and wrote about his daily experiences. One of his columns titled, "Dude, Where's My Civil War," questioned the media's coverage of the war and the existence of civil war in Iraq.

I can't remember if it was before or after March 20, 2003, but the question was put to some of the media's talking heads, "Will the Iraqis fight for their freedom?". Perhaps that anwswer will become apparent soon...

Why do I react to any artical such as this one with skepticism and a default to exaggeration or outright fabrication by the reporter?

I wonder how they find these people to interview? Is this field work from the lobby bar of whichever hotel they roost in?

Per our recent conversation about whether the MSM was telling it straight.

They're telling it about as crooked as they can get. They're experts at twisting the truth to make things look much worse than they really are.

frozen chicken livers in the freezer

How long will those last once the power goes out?

They bought a Kalashnikov rifle

Look for the crime rate, especially the murders of children, to go through the roof. They're more likely to be murdered by a member of their own family now. Insert tirelessly and endlessly every Brady Center cliche you've ever heard about guns here.

I stockpiled guns and ammo once upon a time, too. During the Clinton administration. I've since sold off a small part of what I call "the Clinton arsenal" (more like the anti-Clinton arsenal, and NO, that statement isn't a veiled threat against him).

I though that was what you were supposed to do. According to the Chronicle, we're going to have a civil war too.

Sheesh.
