Ordinary Iraqi families getting ready to fight They're stockpiling weapons, food and fuel
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Wednesday, March 15, 2006 | Charles Levinson

Baghdad -- Om Hussein, wrapped in her black abaya, lists the contents of the family's walk-in storage closet: three 175-pound cases of rice, two 33-pound cases of cooking fat, six cases of canned tomatoes, three crates of assorted legumes, a one-month supply of drinking water, frozen chicken livers in the freezer. And in the garage, jerry cans filled with fuel are piled floor to ceiling.

Om Hussein, who was reluctant to give her full name, and her Shiite family are preparing for war. They've stocked up on food. They bought a Kalashnikov rifle and a second car -- so that there is space for all 13 members of their extended family should they need to flee in a hurry.

"We are afraid of what will happen in the coming days," she says. "Maybe there will be a monthlong curfew, or maybe fighting in the streets will force my family to stay in the house for days at a time."

In the past week, President Bush has tried to assure Americans that Iraq has stepped back from the brink of civil war. "Iraqis have shown the world they want a future of freedom and peace," he told the Foundation for Defense of Democracies on Monday.

Few Iraqis, however, share Bush's view that the crisis has been averted. They are readying themselves for the worst, fleeing likely flash points, stockpiling weapons and basic foodstuffs, barricading their neighborhoods, and drawing lines in the sand delineating Sunni and Shiite territory.

"Pssssst! Pick up a newspaper every now and again. The Iraqis have been risking and losing life and limb for a very long time now."

One of you calls me Murtha and the other thinks I don't read newspapers. Sheesh!

It is indeed time for the average Iraqi to pick up a gun and start killing the terrorists in their midst. Until they do, they are going to continue to get car bombed and killed in their own neighborhoods. Their aren't enough troops in the whole US and Iraqi armies combined to do it for them. It is going to take a whole lot of armed citizens who take some initiative and purge the terrorists.

We are there to help, but we can't do it for them. They know their neighborhoods and the people in them. Our military can't easily distinguish the foreigners but the locals sure can.

They have the same choice we would have if it was happening here. Roll over and die, or do something about it.

I applaud the Iraqis who are arming themselves. They are the ones who will free their country.

“don't be retarded.”

Wouldn’t think of since you seem to have it well in hand.

”Why is it you trolls ALWAYS want to go genocidal when the MSM claims things are getting tough??????????? Frikin idiots.

LOL! Well is takes a real genius to make the leap from “cracking down” to “genocide” speaking of idiots...Sigh!

But then it is always the tactic of emotional midgets to attack the messenger and falsify the argument when they cannot deal with the actual issues the messenger raises.

But hey here we are in 2006 and we should just continue the 19th century tactics with alley and house-to-house fighting for our guys…Sigh

This is not the only news outlet reporting this. I wonder how often Allegra gets outside the wire and takes a stroll around Baghdad? Sitting in some protected enclave in Baghdad makes here an expert on the pulse if every day Iraqis? How many has she interviewed? And gee the air strikes this morning seem to be some “cracking down” so they must be genocidal trolls? Friggen idiot is right…Sigh!

One of your more abysmal "geographic" mistakes was coming here to deride FReepers with their own, personal boots on the ground in Iraq as know-nothings.

Our only mistake may have been in not exposing your black heart sooner.

Take heart, though, your remaining years on Earth will be light duty compared to those that follow; when you assume your new role as a "plaything" for your namesake.

We will either have to crack down hard and level the hot spots like we should have done from the start or get the hell out and let them fight it out.

That is what you posted at the start of this thread troll. Air Strikes most certainly AREN'T levelling things. And yes saying that you are going to level the "hot spots" is genocidal. And also, house to house fighting isn't anywhere NEAR 19th century, so I would LOVE to know where you came up with that BS.

And another thing, Allegra is right at the heart of what is going on. She does get "outside the wire" although there isn't a wire (just showcasing what you don't know yet again), and she's been around the entire country, as have I. Things aren't nearly as bad as they would seem to be, but go ahead and keep buying into what the MSM sells to you.

Old Sarge is there right now. Ask him. You won't. His views are skewed too huh?

It fits. Since Lejes got the zot, we may have a new leader in the "Skewed Vision 2006" awards.

I am wondering if an assault by 400+ "insiders" (Iraqi security force infiltrators) would have made a dent in the Green Zone defensive perimeter. How many U.S. forces are on duty at any given time.
