NEW YORK -- Autum Ashante, a 7-year-old black girl who caused a stir at two Westchester schools by reciting a poem she wrote about white nationalism, received support from some New York City leaders on Tuesday.
First, she stood on the City Hall steps with Councilman Charles Barron, who denounced what he described as attacks and harassment since Autum spoke last month at a middle and high school. Barron said he planned to ask Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office to look into whether the girl's free speech rights were violated.
Later, she had an appearance scheduled with the Rev. Al Sharpton.
On Feb. 28, Autum delivered a poem titled "White Nationalism Put U In Bondage," in which Christopher Columbus and Charles Darwin are likened to pirates and vampires. She also asked students to stand and recite the "Black Child's Pledge," an oath of responsibility and black pride.
When white students at the Peekskill High School assembly stood with black students, Autum told them to sit down, the school district's superintendent said. The Peekskill City School District then sent recorded messages to parents of its 3,000 students apologizing to anyone who was offended.
Barron said he couldn't understand why anyone would be offended. He characterized the girl as "brave" and "outspoken in telling the truth," and he defended her 162-word poem, praising it as evoking "peace, power and pride about her heritage."
"Someone decided to call parents and apologize," Barron, a former Black Panther, said at the news conference. "Some are talking about banning her from speaking in the school system. You don't have to agree with everything we say, but we have a right to say it. We are very, very proud of you, Autum."

A lot of children of exceptional intelligence encouraged to be either left or right by adults around them, tend to rebel as they grow into there teens or 20s and lead towards a political party opposite that of there parents.
Quiz: Miss, what ship did Darwin sail on? Where did he go? Was he ever in Africa? Did he own slaves? Did he support slavery? What is a "paradigm"?
This poem seems to me like a put up job - inspired and probably written by a parent and a parent who was totally ignorant of where Darwin stood on the issue of slavery. Like many scientists in England and Europe at the time, slavery was treated as an abomination and Darwin was an abolitionist. In Voyage of the Beagle he wrote an extraordinarily moving denunciation of slavery, its evils and the fundamental immorality of those who supported slavery, directly or indirectly:

It is argued that self-interest will prevent excessive cruelty; as if self-interest protected our domestic animals, which are far less likely than degraded slaves, to stir up the rage of their savage masters. It is an argument long since protested against with noble feeling, and strikingly exemplified, by the ever-illustrious Humboldt. It is often attempted to palliate slavery by comparing the state of slaves with our poorer countrymen: if the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin; but how this bears on slavery, I cannot see; as well might the use of the thumb-screw be defended in one land, by showing that men in another land suffered from some dreadful disease. Those who look tenderly at the slave owner, and with a cold heart at the slave, never seem to put themselves into the position of the latter; what a cheerless prospect, with not even a hope of change! picture to yourself the chance, ever hanging over you, of you wife and your little children—those objects which nature urges even the slave to call his own—being torn from you and sold like beasts to the first bidder! And these deeds are done and palliated by men, who profess to love their neighbours as themselves, who believe in God, and pray that his Will be done on earth! It makes one’s blood boil, yet heart tremble, to think that we Englishmen and our American descendants, with their boastful cry of liberty, have been and are so guilty: but it is a consolation to reflect, that we at least have made a greater sacrifice, than ever made by any nation, to expiate our sin.

The charge against Darwin is pointing at how Darwin's work has been used as evidence that religious thought is distorted and must be removed from the public square and the schools..

This my friends is a condemnation of "The Great Society" that was supposed to uplift the poor of this nation but instead destroyed the black family with a legion of social workers and "do gooders" who promised much but delivered death, dependency and destruction of the black community. Their dependency being created and manipulated so as to assure the Democrat power base without having to actually engage Black people and their aspirations as just people and citizens of America.

Another charge.. saying the same.. death is everywhere in the Black community, unemployment and drugs take the children who make it.. but the hand of abortion, the eugenic dream of Margaret Sanger has taken half of its toll in the US in the lives of Black children. And, this horror has been visited on the community to both encourage irresponsibility and to cynically reduce the numbers of undesirables, even though these undesirables could just have easily been the next Condoleeza Rice or Colin Powell.
The horror that has been visited on any community that has accepted the dependency offered by the programs of "The Great Society" has been staggering. Blacks are just some of the victims, but poor whites from the Appalachians and rural south, and Latinos who have been sucked in have suffered too.
Letting go of dependency on Food Stamps, rent support, day care, Medicaid, and Aid for Dependent Children is such a barrier. If you get a job, and try to work your way out.. you lose $2 for every $1 you earn. The social workers point out all that you will lose if you earn another $1000 per year. Its insane.. but I have been there.. you just have to tell them to go to heck.. and resolve to live without until you make it on your own.. but it is so hard.

The rest of this poem is just a restatement of the same charges.. this is about the betrayal of the "White Liberals" who have long promised opportunity and freedom while offering dependency and death as the solution to achieve those ends..
This is just the recognition, and the anger, that precedes dignity. The tool of Racism is key to the Liberal agenda because it misdirects people who happen to be Black from seeing that this is not about Race and not about the "White man" keeping them down. Its about faith and values and the family and empowering ones self through hard work and commitment.
The folks who should fear this young lady are the Rats, cause this seems like racist charges against Conservatives.. but clearly it is not. This is an awakening that 40 years of the "Great Society" has only delivered "Crack and Hoe's and Pimps, and millions of missing black children, instead of proud fathers and mothers raising their children to reach for the stars.
