Iraq Foils Plot to Put {421 al-Qaida} Terrorists at Posts {around Green Zone}

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi interior minister said Tuesday that authorities had foiled an al-Qaida plot that would have put hundreds of its men at critical guard posts around Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, home to the U.S. and other foreign embassies as well as the Iraqi government.

A senior Defense Ministry official said the 421 al-Qaida fighters were actually recruited to storm the U.S. and British embassies and take hostages. Several ranking Defense Ministry officials have been jailed in the plot, the official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

Interior Minister Bayan Jabr, in an interview with The Associated Press, said the 421 al-Qaida recruits were one bureaucrat's signature away from acceptance into an Iraqi army battalion whose job is to control the gates and main squares in the Green Zone. The plot was discovered three weeks ago.

"You can imagine what could happen to a minister or an ambassador while passing through these gates when those terrorists are there," Jabr said in the interview conducted at his office inside the Green Zone — a 2-square-mile hunk of prime real estate on the west bank of the Tigris River. The area is a maze of concrete blast walls, concertina wire and checkpoints.

The Defense Ministry official said the plot was uncovered by the military intelligence and the General Intelligence department that works under the government.

The Green Zone has been attacked in the past with mortar rounds and rockets. A number of car bombs driven by suicide attackers have been detonated in the past two years at the entrances, killing scores of people.

On Oct. 14, 2004, two al-Qaida members carried out a suicide attack inside the zone, hitting a market and a cafe. Six people were killed, including four Americans, and 20 people were

", I have been reading that the AQ are in/heading to Afghanistan."
This is what some of us have been saying for about two weeks based on accumulated things read at FR. And some four months back in one of zmans Internet comms. he indicatd soon his work in Iraq would be done, and he would be moving on. Then he came out with a comm indicating he would probaby be moving to Europe to "protect the Muslims". Then when lots of goons where being captured in European cities, he reverted back to saying he would move on, as conditions dictacted. Then we heard a week and a half ago, he most likely was making his way to Sulaymanyah, due east of Kirkuk near the Iranian border.
So yes. Your feedback has every reason to be correct or at least hard to dispute at this point. He will not be given free reign in Iran, because he is a radical Salafist Arab. The Persian Mullahs only allowed him in and out, as it meet their plans for general chaos in Iraq. So he will be heading east to Afghanistan most likely, OR, as Southack ably wrote last week, he could have plans to set up shop in a western ME country at least on a temparory basis. Who knows.

I respect the guy... for a pro-dem, he's still better than any of the turds outside of FOX. But you can sense that he'll call for a pull-out should something like that plot come to fruition.

I'm often tempted to go out on my balcony and yell "Stop your outright lying, you leftist scumbg!" while he's doing his little standup.

That would be great to hear coming over a live feed! I'll keep listening... LOL!

I think they should have a choice between dental work with rusty pliars or a haircut with a blowtorch.

I think I found a connection to todays announcement to the kidnapping of the 50 employees of that security firm last week.

Cap Huff sniffed it out first last week by highlighting this passage from a NYTimes article.

The NYT is still using this incident as support for their agenda, but they could not help but publish some details that, if there is any truth to them, make one wonder what really is going on:

"The target of the abductions also pointed to sectarian rivalries. The gunmen stormed the company, Al Rawafid Security, in the neighborhood of Zayouna, and seized weapons, computer equipment, documents and a safe full of cash, police officials and witnesses said."

"Al Rawafid Security is owned by a relative of Sheik Ghazi al-Yawer, one of Iraq's two vice presidents and a Sunni Arab, according to a company employee who requested anonymity for fear of retribution. Many of the employees are Sunni Arabs and related to Mr. Yawer, said the employee, who was not at the office during the kidnapping."

"Many employees had also been members of Saddam Hussein's security forces, and several were high-ranking officers from the former Iraqi Army, the employee said."

"An aide to Mr. Yawer refused to comment on the incident and said the vice president was out of the country and unavailable."

Now flash forward to today with the announcing of a plot being foiled to plant 421 guards at different enterances of the Green Zone.

Ernest at the Beach linked this snippet earlier:

From the MSNBC story linked at post#59 we have this:

****************************************

The Defense Ministry was carrying out operations to capture the would-be recruits, both men said.

“Most of them were members of the same tribe and came from the same area,” Jabr said but refused to give specifics because of the ongoing operation. Neither Jabr nor the Defense Ministry official would give details on any arrests.

“The 421 were supposed to be in control of the entrances to the Green Zone and internal squares. I mean they were going to be in charge of security in the Green Zone in the future,” Jabr told AP. “They were going to carry out operations. Most of them are wanted terrorists” using false identification.
