JP,
Please save me a lot of reading time and give me the skinney on the Groton scare. What was the final outcome?
Laby
I've been a couple times, it's a lot to take in, so I've just been surveying the landscape, getting the lay of the land, dip my tootsies in a little bits at a time. I lurked FR for about a year, I'm slow (the spin on that is to say, 'thorough') warming up ; ) Save me a place : )
smiling back at you...
Oh my word, just read Piper's post. It sent chills all over.
The Iranians have submarines?
Doesn't it tho.
Sounds like the terrorists are on the move, again. We ALL must stay on our toes, and be aware...
If there is, you can bet it's got a Los Angeles class attack sub up it's baffles and one or more P-3s above it. Probably a frigate or three to greet it the next time it surfaces (or snorts) to recharge it's batteries.
The Iranians do have a few Kilo (Soviet/Russian built) subs. But the east coast of the US is a long way for one of those. Range is reported to be 7,500 nm when snorting at 7 knots. It's farther than that, but they could be refueled in a neutral port, or by a surface ship in some bay in west Africa somewhere. Of course it would take them 1,710 hours or about a month and a half. Less time if they spend considerable time on the surface. But if they did that, and maybe if they snorted all the way, most of the crew would be sick as dogs when they got there. They only have three of them, and reports are that the Iranians are having problems operating the Kilos even in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea, let alone out in the open waters of the Indian Ocean and Atlantic.
This is probably a Russian/Soviet one, but it is a Kilo.
BumPing!
most of us around here are very watchful, even here in Navy housing off the base, we look for unusual things and patterns going on. I found out that this morning Security turned someone away at the Main gate, that refused to open a backpack for inspection, I'm trying to find out what that was all about.
That's very reassuring. Good to know all eyes are watching.
