"We're seeing it in everything," said one of Mr. Bush's closest aides last week. "Iraq. The ferocity of an irrational argument over the ports. Guest workers. China and India."

He has lost his credibility. The Emperor has no clothes.
I'm not sure what you meant, but I don't like to think of them as losers just because they have low IQ's. Good input though, and partly true. We had a fire in one of our grand old hotels, luckily mainly confined to two windows (which were all you could see on tv), which is still not in a blighted area; they are trying to drive undesirables further out to bring in the tourists. Meth lab. Caught both the culprits, put lives in danger.
The Internet is a wonderful thing. Go forth and learn, instead of trumpeting your ignorance.
Neither do I.
I just see a lot of FR hyper capitalist types on these threads who smugly boast about how only 'losers' have anything to fear from their precious free trade globalism.
I don't want a country with a net downwards standard of living.
Name one.
I'm starting to see a little different mood drift through here. No matter which side you are on, it is affecting all of us one way or another. People are seriously worried of what their children will face, even college is no guarantee that they will have gotten them prepared for a good and prosperous life.
Heh, that reminds me of an old cartoon I saw in Hustler Magazine
Heh, that's probably pretty tame compared to some of the stuff I've seen on the net, don't seek it out. I don't feel like talking the drug scene any more tonight. I didn't mean to whine about my gas. I'm lucky it wasn't 4 times that.
Where will it end? I have some dark visions (not literally). We have had locally the cops at three schools already and spring isn't even here. Disturbances with racial overtones. Cops are being assigned two to a car. Budget is so overtaxed they were talking of laying off some. Now this is no big thing where you are, but I am telling you that it was unheard of where I live until the last decade or so and may only get worse. Just kids fighting. Cops in schools? Not when I went to school. They called them once in awhile for an individual or couple, never a large problem. We came and went in safety (apart from kids driving crazy).
Your calico cat. I adore calico cats. Yours is getting up there. I lost mine in August, still miss her, she was the product of a calico shorthair and a Himalayan purebred. We sure had a bunch of beautiful cats from that mix. I'm just about of the cat "business". One left. Don't dare let them outside; their lives are shortened by years. Always wished I could live out somewhere where I could have several and they could go outside more. Then I found out once in awhile the coyotes or something gets them . . .guess there are some still around.
Sleep well. Think of something cheerful. Have a little fun. I think it speaks well of people who at least think and talk about the problems even if they can't do much about it. So many don't seem to care.
YOU SAID..."The Internet is a wonderful thing. Go forth and learn, instead of trumpeting your ignorance."
The Internet IS a great opportunity to learn. Its a chance for me to get educated in basic economics, for example.
Heres a basic economics type question, if you wouldnt mind taking the time to answer.
Lets consider the contries I am most interersted in....
US
China
India
Israel
Ireland
Poland
Now, using the Smith / Ricardo paradigms of Free Trade and Comparative Advantage, in what areas of trade do each of those countries have a Comparative Advantage relative to the others, as of today, in your opinion of course.
How do you see that changing in five years, if at all?
Oh, unions. I don't like the corrupt ones, but they did serve their purpose. I'd rather put up with them and have the jobs back than where it is going now. We have all paid the price for the lost jobs in my area. You should see the replacement jobs. It is a pipe dream. Art galleries and gambling boats. We're having a lot of gambling addictions now. You didn't see much of that before. 1-800-BETSOFF.
I will reply that everything is constantly changing.
I agree with you, and wonder if there is such a thing as political freedom without economic freedom.
Look around us. As people lose their economic freedom, they lose the imagination necessary to elect anything beyond the norm, which is two parties that support the same policies. And these would be the policies that take decision-making away from us, in all aspects of our lives.
(Gosh, this is an interesting and stimulating thread...just like in the old days)
You're right. Plus as these businesses get bigger they get boggier and employees bust out and start there own business. The access to startup capital is by far the best in the USA.
I think most of these protectionists are simply very insecure. I have traveled the world and I sense these people are rightly worried that there is some one in China, or Laos, or Vietnam, that simply works harder and smarter. The protectionists are basically insecure and/or lazy. There are millions of very high paying US jobs that go unfilled every day in the US because people are too stupid or too lazy to do them.
GIVING these lazy and stupid Americans jobs (through protectionism) when there is someone over seas dying to work just frosts me. I'm not talking about low paying labor either. There is a need right now for thousands and thousands of skilled workers in Florida. These jobs pay up to $100/per hour or more. You do need a skill, diligence, industriousness, and an education, but they are here in droves.
"America used to be totally self-sustaining in all economic areas'
When was that? Before or after the Boston Tea Party? Study some history dude.
Bravo!
"It took $12.50 to top off my tank of my small Honda the other day;"
So what? Buy some oil stocks as a hedge. Big deal.
It was just an observation. I wasn't whining about it.
"Manufacturing what ? TV, VCRs, DVD player, computers ? How many of these things are manufactured in America anymore ?"
Don't like it? Start a business and quit complaining.
"It appears the "free traitors" think they have won."
No we have one. Get on the gravy train. Or get left behind.
