Russias determination to undermine the U.S. policy in the Middle East may well weaken U.S. power. But opposing punitive sanctions for Iran at the U.N. and endorsing HAMAS is likely to cost Russia dearly.
On March 8, 2006, after discussing the Iran crisis with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov conveyed Russias objections to sanctioning Iran, while warning that there is no military solution to this crisis. Instead, he welcomed the European Union proposal to continue exploring diplomatic solutions with Iran, despite years of European-led negotiations that merely allowed Tehran to continue to develop its nuclear program. And nuclear weapons in Iran, are likely to pose a grave danger to Russia; much graver than to the U.S.

Hamas? Is that terrorist organisation financed by USAID and American taxpayers dollars?
Without USAID, there would be no HAMAS. Period.
Russia is only taking advantage of situation already created by BJ Clinton.
Here we come to the real issue - the activities of Liberal American Jews who fully supported BJ Clinton in well orchestrated fashion (NJRAC appeals, for example).
Those people in their actions harmed Israel while pretending to protect the interests of Jews as a people.
Putin is low hanging fruit. Pulling the masks from the real enemies of Israel is more demanding and more rewarding task.
Any takers?
On May 13, 1967 a Soviet parliamentary delegation visited Cairo and informed the Egyptian leaders that Israel had concentrated eleven to thirteen brigades along the Syrian border in preparation for an assault within a few days, with the intention of overthrowing the revolutionary Syrian Government. This was a complete fabrication designed by the Soviets to destabilize the Middle East. Similar false information may have been given to Egypt by the Soviets as early as May 2.
The majority of the various Muslim terrorist groups have offices in Damascus. Syria and Iran both fund the same types of Islamic terrorists.
In terms of Putin note who this KBG master of deception is arming: Iran, Syria, Venezuela and continues close relations with Cuba, North Korea other arch-American & anti-Israeli leftist and or Muslim tyrants.
Not one dime of US tax monies should have every be given to any Pal-Arab terrorist group.
How about this? "U.S. determination to undermine Russia's policy in ex-USSR may well weaken Russia's power."
Frankly speaking I do not fancy Hamas, but this is a harsh reality. As Reagan put it , there are "their" and "our" bastards. It looked that world leaders had stopped using bastards as a tool of political pressure... But... Alas! It all comes back.
I bet if we lived in 80-s and Hamas was one of the mojahedeen gangs fighting against USSR, the US support of Hamas were OK.
If one NATO country harbours Chechen guerillas (UK) another takes wounded Chechen guerillas to their hospitals (Turkey, Germany), then what Russia is supposed to do? Surely keep giving up its military bases (as Putin did) and keep the poker face, as if nothing is happening. Just give up and give up, in distant hope that Russia will get some sort of "gratification" for it. Gorbachev believed in it. Putin apparently believed in it to certain stage. Nothing in the history was ever won by giving up.
I wonder if Benjamin Franklin while negotiating US independence with Brits in 1780s would be so soft and giving up as Russian government is now. Sure, Brits would be pleased and very supportive. But US would be still a bunch of colonies living under the royal governance.

Israel was the strong supporter of Russia stance against Chechen Islamic Separatism-terrorism.
So Putin regime essentially stabbed Israel in the back by inviting Hamas in Moscow.
Let us put it this way - if US supports Saudi Arabia which is the nest of wahhabism, how Isreal should feel about it? Isn't it a backstabbing according to your judgement?
There is no question of romanticism. US dealings with Saudi Regime also worries me a lot, but at least US did not invited Hamas butchers to the White House. Certainly, I don't want my country engaged with Jihad financing Saudi Princes, but it's dishonest to equate US dealings with Saudi Regime and Putin open acceptance of Hamas.
It is dishonest to believe that the same methods applied by different countries are different. It is OK if the "good" guy smacks another guy on the face without a visible reason, his actions are justified by his "goodness". But if a "bad" guy does so, it is a crime.
If US used to support Iran and Iraq while they were fighting each other (they both classify as butchers), what is wrong with Russia using HAMAS as a political leverage.
If inviting Cechen guerillas representative (forgot his name... Ilyas Akhmadov) to US does not equal to inviting HAMAS to Moscow, then I must be mising something. 2+2 is not equal 1+3, then.
And do not forget, HAMAS was democratically elected. How come that democracy went wrong, huh?
