Precisely. It's OK to PO France, those dirty leftist FROGS (with nukes). And it's OK to PO Russia, those filthy commies (with nukes). And it's OK to PO Germany, those back stabbing, money grabbing youths of Hitler (that house our nukes). But don't PO the arabs in DUBAI!!!!!! WE'RE DOOMED!!!!!!

Even the French and Russians want to live, and don't have the relgious martyr impluses. Deterance works with people like that. It's not clear that it works with Mad Mullahs, Insane Imams, Angry Ayatollahs, Wired Wahabbists, or the folks who follow them and riot and firebomb because of an insulting cartoon.

Not that that means I agree we should worry about POing them. Just that we evaluate and prepare for the consequences of doing so. (I do believe there's plenty of preparation in Ohio, Knob Noster, and out in Montana, to handle the problem, should it arise.

severalThanks for the reply. Six days sounds much too long to respond to a serious situation. Sounds too long for getting resupply and task force support too in an emergency situation. As a civvy I have to take Gen. Abhazid (sp?) at his word that the UAE has been "absolutely vital."

I was talking about yard work and mooring there for liberty. We have traditionally used either Perth or the PI's for shipyard repairs or to do pier moorings for liberty etc. Every deck on a carrier and other ships below second deck is classified. Meaning what? meaning that even prior service vets with Honorable Discharges can not come back for a look see even on a decommissioned ship. Yet hey foreign nationals come on in guys the ship is open to you. Welcome to our defense secrets.

As for replenishment? Send the USNS ships into port to load up and bring the fuel & supplies out to the ships while underway. Why is this so difficult to understand? The Navy ran supplies that way for decades. It doesn't mean a ship can't have a liberty call as long as they anchor out rather than mooring at a pier. Buying needed goods there is one thing, placing ships there in harms way is quite another. That nations loyalties change with the wind. BTW Generals are not sailors.

If there were links it wouldn't be intel.

Sure it would, just open source. Not all, or even most, intell involves cloak and dagger or high tech burn before reading stuff.

This isn't the day of 16 knots per hour ships.

That would be pretty under powered ship, to only be able to get up to 16 knots or from 10 to 26 knots in a whole hour.

Hint: knots == nautical miles per hour. Knots per hour would thus be nautical miles/hour/hour, an accelleration not a speed.

Odd mistake for a "snipe" to make.

Situations like that is why we have fleet replenishment ships and practice UnRep (Underway Replenishment). Same reason the Air Force has Tanker aircraft, pretty much anyway.

Yep that's why they have the USNS fleet. You can refuel, load groceries, supplies, mail, and parts. We would go to sea six months doing this. All our fueling was at sea. We also had capabilities to refuel other ships in company if needed.

I know but I still have an offical ships fact sheet printed onboard ship. Top speed "Over 30 knots". Of course she went much much faster LOL.

Never mind I see what you're saying. I wasn't even using nautical miles for my estimates. I was simply using a rough figure guesstimate of 40MPH speed and factored it into the distance and time. Most of the ones who dealt with that stuff on the ship were the Quarter Masters and Deck Apes. Some snipes down in the IC rooms would know also as it was their equipment that did the actual measuring. I just worked on the chillers and reefers :>} and was TAD to Liberty Boats in foreign boats.

Thanks again for your reply but "Generals aren't sailors?" That's weak. This isn't solely about the Navy. Being the General on the ground in Iraq I would have to think he knows what makes his mission work. As I said; if he says "the UAE is absolutely vital" I have to take him at his word.

Dubai Ports Worls to divest itself of all American interests

If the UAE is going to take one single deal going sour this personally, it's for the best they divest themselves of the U.S.

Not in the least. Nobody understands a ships security needs & vulnerabilities more than a sailor especially a ships Captain who ultimately will be the scapegoat for Flags screw ups. You can't when tied up at a pier just put the key in the ignition switch and drive off. You tell me other than some PC charges when was the last time a Flag Officer was relieved of duty for their screw ups? None were relieved of duty even for the KITTY HAWK or USS KENNEDY problems even though the problems were a direct result of FLAG Officers {Admirals in the Pentagon} decisions relating to needed shipyard work.

This whole thing about reprisal by Dubai is way off the mark IMHO. Take a look at a map and you will see Iran right across the Strait of Hormuz from the UAE.

Uh-huh. And Iran's been there the whole time. The UAE has dealt with that problem for a long time; I'm sure they believe that they can continue to deal with it.

Being a sock puppet for the United States after the US has massively insulted the UAE, however, will show weakness. And showing weakness merely encourages one's enemies--including Iran.

Every nation on the Arabian Peninsula has a vested interest in keeping the USA happy.

Wait a minute, this flies in the face of "the UAE supports terrorists" line.

They are divesting themselves of US port ownership which was what the whole debate was about.

Actually it's a LOT more than that. They are divesting themselves of ALL US interests. They have a huge plane order with Boeing. They have other large deals with US corporations. They own large tracts of land in this country and pay taxes on that land. That's not all. I would venture to say that any hope we might have had of using Dubai as a staging area for launching of attacks in the WOT is gone. It's going to be a nightmare for us. You know what? I still agree with the action taken by Congress and I know it's going to cost us dearly.

Like the Saudis, the royal family in Dubai is playing footsie with our enemies and playing both ends against the middle. We have to learn that in the long term, Islam never operates to benefit the infidel. Islam is not interested in "peaceful coexistence." In fact, this is a concept that is only familiar to the American liberal.

"Now, let's get COSCO to do the same."

Hah. To read the moronic posts by some individuals screaming to kill the ports deal - especially the ones today now screaming that Dubai just stabbed US (?!?) in the back, you'd get the impression the idiots think China - bombs to Taliban AFTER military action started - has our best interests at heart.

Disgusting.
