AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Former Gov. Ann Richards said Wednesday she has cancer of the esophagus and will undergo treatment at the world-renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Richards, 72, went in for tests Monday and got the diagnosis Tuesday, said spokesman Bill Maddox.

Maddox said the former governor is waiting to hear from M.D. Anderson how advanced the cancer is and what her chances are.

"She's facing this challenge," Maddox said.

Richards, a Democrat, was governor from 1991 to 1995, losing a re-election bid to George W. Bush. Since 2001, she has been an adviser at a public relations and lobbying firm.

Governor Richards should just lie back and enjoy it...

Seriously, hope Ma Richards treatment is successful. I also hope that she stays in New York and never sets foot in Texas again. On second thought, can't she move to Jersey?

Prayer bump. Hang in there, Ann. I wouldn't vote for you, but hope you win this one.

I hope she gets through this. Whether you agree with her or not, she certainly is a character, and she's done good work the last few years raising awareness for osteoporosis.

You beat me to the post by 1 minute. Prayers for her and her family. Everything I have heard about this form of cancer makes me think she should begin putting her affairs in order and prepare for that day we will all have to face at some point.

Hope she beats this. I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy. Well, maybe Osama and those fruitcakes in Iran and N. Korea, but not anyone I personally know.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ma Richards having coffee at Barnes and Noble in Manhattan. She was very gracious.

I wish her the best. She is a lousy Rat, but as a has-been, she's more entertaining than a threat.

Cancer is a lousy way to go.

I still remember seeing Mother Richards on a local channel here in Houston during election coverage in 1992 (the year the Slickster won). She and the Dims at the rally were carrying forks, and their slogan (as mouthed by Ann) was "You kin stick a fowark in Gowarge Bush-he's dunn!"

Let's hope it's not "fork time" for Ann.

read all the post above and ask yourself, would the statements be similar if this were DU and it were Bush who was diagnosed?

Just given her appearance--she's looked like she's been put through a wringer for years--this isn't a shocking piece of news. I wish her the very best in beating this.

This is an especially ugly cancer. I have a good friend struggling with it now. I wish her well.

She's also worked as a shill for the tobacco industry in recent years.
