The influx of foreigners to New York and its suburbs and the continuing exodus of non-Hispanic whites to other parts of the country have transformed the face of metropolitan New York so profoundly that whites will constitute a minority of the region's population within a few years, demographers say.
The shift would make New York the first large metropolitan area outside the South and West in which whites do not make up a majority, according to an analysis of 2004 Census estimates by the Brookings Institution that was released yesterday.
The analysis also reveals a historic reversal: For the first time since at least the 19th century, the black population of both the city and, to a lesser extent, the region, has declined. In the five boroughs, according to the estimates, the number of blacks declined by about 30,000 since 2000, dipping below 30 percent of the overall population, as the migration of blacks to the suburbs and areas like the South outpaced immigration from the Caribbean and Africa.

among the nation's 88 metropolitan areas with half a million or more people, New York is one of only three Houston and Honolulu are the others where the proportion of blacks, Hispanics and Asians each exceeds their share of the national population.

"Because many "Hispanics" in this country are really pure-blood Mexican Indians.
And many are not. It's surprising how many guys with names like Gustavo Martinez are running around.
Not necessarily. A 'Hispanic' from the Dominican Repiblic isn't white, nor a Mexican of Indian ancestry. Plus it depends on the gubmint agency and if the Hispanic wants to play the minority victim race card game. And last I looked most Hispanics are brown and 'brown' isn't white.
That being said the FBI-DOJ does classify Hispanics mostly as white in their crime reporting. That's one reason 'white on black' hate crimes appear high (or at all). Every time some Latin King gang banger named Juan shoots a Crip named Tyrone - BINGO, we have a white on black hate crime.
This is what happens when you institute government program after government program that discriminates against people by their skin color - they flee.
"New York is still the classic melting pot, with a whole diverse array of immigrants coming in, but the suburbs are now becoming part of this bigger melting pot," said William H. Frey, the Brookings Institution demographer who conducted the analysis. "The suburbs are now tasting this new diversity."
His analysis found that whites declined to 52.2 percent of the population in 2004 from 54.2 percent in 2000 in the census-defined metropolitan area, which includes the city, Long Island, the northern suburbs, northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania, but not Connecticut.
"We went down 2.1 percent from 2000 to 2004," Dr. Frey said. "If we go another 2 percent before the end of the decade, you're there." He added: "The suburbs are now contributing to this. They've all shown a decline in the percent of whites since 1990."
And herein lies the rub. When I was a kid on Long Island in the 1980s, Nassau was VERY segregated (as cyborg and I have discussed at length on other threads), with only a handful of Hispanics, and blacks segregated to Hempstead and Roosevelt. From what I understand, Nassau is increasingly Hispanic (especially on the South Shore) and Asian (Koreans and Chinese on the North Shore, East Indians all over). The descendants of the Italian, Jewish, and Irish immigrants who can't afford to live in the "exclusive" communities are simply voting with their feet.
However, wait until they get to Florida and North Carolina, and they realize that the same phenomenon is happening there as well, albeit in not as large numbers. I mean, is there ANYWHERE (outside of a handful of retirement communities) where the white population is increasing faster than that of Asians and Hispanics?
NJ is consider the bedroom community to NY. That is what tips the data for the city.
Guys with names like "Gustavo Martinez" can be either Indian or Mestizo. Very few Mexicans are white.
Well, yeah, they had to gerrymander the hell out of that one "earmuffs" district to elect one Latino congressman. Meanwhile, the three black districts are fairly contigugous.
It sounds like there has been a huge uptick in Latino migration to the Chicago area and it is bypassing the city. If the black population is mostly staying urban and south-suburban, I can see the suburbs having more Latinos than blacks. But the entire Chicago metro area? I would need to see the news story that claims that before I believe it. That would be a transformation of historic proportions.
Philly is NYC circa late 60s/early 70s. With a worse economy. ;-)
I surely hope that y'all now understand why hillary finds it so easy to be re-elected senator from this poor state.
I know I've said this before, but in my NJ experience the white suburbs didn't experience flight when Asian families started moving in--if anything, it was a sign that the schools were good and going to get even more competitive. Still segregated across other lines, though.

That and throwing out the MIL absentee ballots helps.
The real trend that I see is that most of the whites moving out of the NYC area (to say nothing of Boston or metro DC) are lower middle to middle class, rather than the affluent. There aren't that many places left to "flee" to and even the exurbs have gotten more "colorful."
I wish someone would write an article and/or do a study on what happens when affluent minorities/immigrants move into an area and displace not-as-affluent whites. Examples abound along both coasts.
Just curious, but why do demographers segregate "hispanic whites" from "non-hispanic whites?" I don't recall anyone segregating non-Italian whites and non-Irish whites from Italian whites and Irish whites.
Moving from the New York area to Boston makes me feel like I'm watching the current change in America from the bleacher seats.
The problem is that demographers and policy makers would like to consider "Hispanics" as a race like Asians, Blacks, and Whites, but it doesn't work clearly because all Hispanics have in common is language. On Census forms, given a choice, many of them will check off "other", "white", or "native American" because that's accurate for them but it makes the phenomenon of Hispanicness untestable. It has to be checked separately.
In other words, the difference is that there are no Italians who are Native American, Black, or a mix of races like most Hispanics are.
OK, but if we count hispanic whites as white, then I doubt that whites are a minority.
The 20% that I estimate as being white are largely affluent South Americans and Cuban Americans who generally live among white folk.
"among the nation's 88 metropolitan areas with half a million or more people, New York is one of only three Houston and Honolulu are the others where the proportion of blacks, Hispanics and Asians each exceeds their share of the national population."
It's not about technical definitions, about how these groups function in society, and for those purposes we separate Hispanics from non-Hispanic whites.
