The influx of foreigners to New York and its suburbs and the continuing exodus of non-Hispanic whites to other parts of the country have transformed the face of metropolitan New York so profoundly that whites will constitute a minority of the region's population within a few years, demographers say.
The shift would make New York the first large metropolitan area outside the South and West in which whites do not make up a majority, according to an analysis of 2004 Census estimates by the Brookings Institution that was released yesterday.
The analysis also reveals a historic reversal: For the first time since at least the 19th century, the black population of both the city and, to a lesser extent, the region, has declined. In the five boroughs, according to the estimates, the number of blacks declined by about 30,000 since 2000, dipping below 30 percent of the overall population, as the migration of blacks to the suburbs and areas like the South outpaced immigration from the Caribbean and Africa.

among the nation's 88 metropolitan areas with half a million or more people, New York is one of only three Houston and Honolulu are the others where the proportion of blacks, Hispanics and Asians each exceeds their share of the national population.

My understanding is that they sometimes are. It depends on if it is beneficial for them and further establishes their credentials as minority victims or not. For example, when Hispanics commit crimes, they are tracked in the database as whites. (This overstates crimes by whites and makes it impossible to determine how much crime Hispanics are causing.) But when Hispanics are victims of crimes they are tracked separately from whites.
I'd hate to be the last white out the door. They'll need to keep him there as a tax slave.
No, the sad truth is that, when whites _do_ become a small minority in this country, they will be viewed as an elite group of "oppressors" and afforded treatment not unlike that of the Jews in Germany in the early thirties.
I am guessing that - sometime in the future, maybe a century, perhaps a couple - the whites may be forced into something of "A Last Stand". Most likely the only areas that will remain "majority white" by then will be the north-central plains of the USA, Central Canada, and Australia/New Zealand.

Not quite, third world countries normally get a lot of sunshine!
Meant to ping you to #66
New York is in many ways better than ever. Safer than when I was a kid, with VERY expensive real estate.
Law enforcement has separate categories for white, non-hispanic and white, hispanic. This was necessary because of the large influx of hispanic illegals. The criminal statistics associated with the white, hispanic population is much higher than the white, non-hispanic group. The lefties were trying to bury this disparity by lumping all "whites" into a single group.
Most white Hispanics tend to be from the upper and middle classes of their country. Not too many Cuban Americans (most of whom are white) involved in criminal activity relative to other groups, for what its worth.
This is exactly why there is now a white, non-hispanic and a white, hispanic designation applied to law enforcement criminal statistics collection. My wife is a dispatcher and this is standard practice when she enters crime stat information.
The improved data input will reveal it is hispanics and blacks attacking each other. Much of it is gangs.
Not quite. More like Brazil, where the upper classes are white (and Asian), the middle and lower middle classes are brown, and the poor are black. I have a feeling that, outside of economically depressed areas where poor whites will continue to dominate (think Appalachia), the lower class whites will intermarry with the other races in their social class.
When I moved from Chula Vista to Mira Mesa in 1983, I knew the area was predominantly asian. It was called "Manila Mesa" by the locals. My kids grew up in a nicely mixed community with students that had high academic standards. They had friends every ethnic and racial group.
I sold that house in 2001 as the hispanic juggernaut from the south arrived and turned my nicely mixed community into a growing hispanic population. The graffitti, drive by shootings and Spanish advertising in the windows at the Circle K mini-mart were red flags that indicated it was time to go.
They have already ruined Australia. Gun control and confiscation. Socialism. They have their own problems with their Islamic population too.
Bingo! The PC maxim that "diversity is our strength" is a steaming pile. Our strength comes from the common values we share. My development has a broad mix of ethnic and racial groups. We all share a passion to create great a top quality product for our customer. We also share a broad interest in ethnic foods and take advantage of suggestions offered by members of the group with some expertise to offer. The group ages range from 22 to 70. New college grads and grizzled old PhDs.
My project manager is a black electrical engineer. We work well together. I enjoy brainstorming new data comm approaches with him. The newest member of the team is a white CS grad. He's 7 days younger than my middle son. I'm helping him polish his skills as a software engineer on a large team. I hope he will be one of those who can carry the torch as some of us old farts think about retiring in the next 10 years. We have a Chinese young lady electrical engineer. She helps me improve my Mandarin Chinese pronunciation, I help her write better C/C++. We both like Thai food.
Many people assume the trappings of success are the consequence of privilege. They look at a successful person and expect society to elevate them to the same status as some compensation for perceived past injustice. They don't understand the success is built from the bottom up by virtue of hard work and tenacity over a long time frame. It is a process not an end condition.
I encounter lots of poor white people working as servers in the local restaurants. Many of them are poor because they didn't pay attention in school and have few prospects to do better in life. The college students who work as servers are usually gone after graduation. They leave town as there are few decent jobs in the area.
I've had the poor white kid experience. Hanging flyers on 5000 doorknobs for 4 cents each. Washing dishes and cooking to save money for the high school prom. After graduating from UCSD, I worked at Radio Shack to pay for grad school. Minimum wage plus a commission. The pay sucked, so I earned a First Class Radiotelephone license with a couple weeks of study and hired on as an electronics tech (and IBEW union member) for twice minimum wage. Over the next year that pay doubled (because I was the most productive person in the office). That move from 4 cents a doorknob to $9.75/hr took 5 years.
I'll spare the details, but suffice to say it has taken 26 years of hard work to move from $19k/year to $133K/year. Long stretches of 14+ hour days. Lots of time spent on travel to support customers in the US and Europe. It wasn't privilege. It was grueling hard work.
My youngest son looks at the fancy computer I use to do my work. Clueless, he offers that he wishes he had one like that. I remind him that it was built from parts acquired over a period of 3 years. I didn't buy it with all the toys. The toys were acquired after I had earned enough money to buy them. I've never had the "privilege" of buying a computer with everything I wanted from a store. Every computer in the house has been built from parts as funds were available. Computers, careers and success in life are accomplished in a similar fashion.
The hispanics are coming in droves to Idaho too. I see a lot more dark skinned, Spanish speaking families walking the aisles of Walmart compared to 5 years ago. The "low rider" cars have arrived too. On the positive side, the Mexican restaurants are flourishing. That means more places with food I like. Forty years of living in San Diego isn't easily brushed off.
The Twin Falls area seems to have the largest hispanic population based on the last demographic maps I examined.
