Congratulations to juliej for organizing this and starting the thread.
Actually, there has been a group going to this parade since 2000, when Hillary, Nadler, and every MSM camera in town were there. The politicians on parade today were Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, City Council President Quinn, Congressman Anthony Weiner, Queens Councilman John Liu, Eric Gioia, and John Tasini. There may have been others that we didn't spot.
Freepers in attendance: firebrand, juliej, and Raquel. Also, nonfreepers Tom, Jesse, Ann G., Lifeboat Louie (the valiant savior of the unborn, among the many who served jail time for their rescue efforts), and others whose names I did not get.
Yes, there was a banner that said "U.S. Out of Iraq" on the left-hand side and "U.S. Out of Ireland" on the right. I had been quiet up to this point. I had just calmly held my "QUEENS LOVES BUSH" sign (which got a few thumbs-up from the marchers!) and hoped the little windmills on my St. Patrick's Day headgear were turning in the breeze, but this was too much. I made sure they knew that Bush just wanted Ireland's oil. Then when the "Free Palestine" people came by, I was warmed up. In fact we all went nuts at this point, asking them why they weren't blowing people up somewhere, and where their dynamite belts were.
Groups marching: Green Party, Hillary people, Free Palestine people, Free David Peltier people, U.S. Out of Iraq (and Ireland) people, Veterans for Peace, AIDS Walk people (GMHC?), the All-City Marching Band (high school kids) and P.S. 59 from the Bronx (elementary school kids). There were other groups marching as well; maybe the stpatsforall website will have a list.
There were Irish musicians, Irish step dancers---and Mexican dancers (I'm just reporting here). There were people dressed up in cute animal outfits, for reasons that will probably remain obscure. A group carrying the rainbow colors brazenly marched by with the American flag on its own left, and the rainbow flag on its own right.
The reception we got was not all negative. It was a parade atmosphere, after all. But we got our share of nastiness too.
I'm sure there will be photos to post later from the stpatsforall website or possibly from news media.
Good work!
Ireland?! IRELAND?! What decade do you people think you're in?
chapter ping
"Green Party"
LOL! I guess they do belong at a St. Paddy's day event.
Sounds like you all had fun, good job!
No Blood for Peat?
Ping
Just look at all of the sectarian violence there. We have obviously failed. What a quagmire!
after-action report
good job....
you should've brought a sign that said "Irish Illegals out of Queens and the US"...that would've gone over well!!
True. Juliej did tell them "Parade Out of Queens."
And the American retort was, "The problem with the Brits is they are underpaid, undersexed, and under Ike"!!!!!!!
We'll take thousands of casualties from the brutal Irish winter!
Is this akin to the "Brokeback Cairn" thing?
Doesn't the US have nothing much in Ireland apart from the US Embassy and Consulates? (Private investments don't count)
Oh I see, "US out of Ireland!" means "Butt out of Northern Ireland talks, Clinton!". Of course the US MSMs will ignore this then.
Gives a whole new meaning to "Gaelic."
LOL
