But Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone, campus police say
A UNC-Chapel Hill graduate told investigators he intentionally drove into a crowd of students on campus Friday to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world," UNC Police Chief Derek Poarch said Saturday.
Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, 22, told detectives to go to the Carrboro apartment he shared with two other men, saying authorities would find evidence there that would explain his decision to hurt students. Poarch declined to say what, if anything, was found, but emphasized that Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone.
It does not appear that Friday's attack had anything to do with a recent editorial criticizing Arabs and a cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad in the campus newspaper, both of which angered many Muslim students, Poarch said at a news conference Saturday.
But because Taheri-azar's statements to police suggested a political motive, campus authorities contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he said.

I don't care what his motivation was. He should be punished for endangering the lives of innocent students.
You are not the only one believing this. You are the first one to post it. The room mates were involved, too.
Thank you, Howlin.
"These are the facts we have to share this afternoon. We are fortunate to have a nationally recognized police department with an excellent track record. We are confident that a thorough investigation will be conducted."
NO mention of the FBI.
"Our student affairs staff and counselors have been providing support to students who watched the scene unfold in the Pit. We encourage any students, faculty or staff who feel they need assistance to seek out counseling from our staff in the University's Counseling and Psychological Services, which can be contacted by calling 966-3658."
Are those who need assistance when they spot vehicles running them down supposed to call this number or campus police-
surely NOT the FBI who was NEVER mentioned.
I'm rather surprised they weren't advised to refer to the required reading on Islam, if they had any other questions.
Very DNC UNC PC BS to placate and subdue inquiring minds.
I don't know why the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor bothered to sign it. They should have had the balls to have Erskin Bowles do it himself.
It is still a hate crime. He should be tried for this as a hater of America and Americans.
Thanks for the ping...I am slightly surprised that this terrorist chose to attack people in one of the most Islam-friendly campuses in the country.
How is the UNC administration handling this story, Howlin?
What the... ? You have to wonder about those guys.
They're so civilized.
You're reading what we can find, friend.

They only have the right to publish things that are offensive to white Christians, don't you know that?
While I agree with most of the sentiments expressed in this thread, I have to say that so far, most of what I heard fits with this being a long wing-nut. Aside from this guy's fecklessness, he fits into the Charles Whitman, John Hinckley, Mark Chapman, etc. pattern, i.e. somewhat the one ficitionalized in Catcher in the Rye i.e. Holden Caulfield.
There was an insightful poster on another thread that wondered about schizophrenia given the perp's age - that schizophrenia tends to have its onset at this age.
The essential difference between this act and that of terrorism is that terrorism is planned and executed by "cells", who often have outside sponsorship.
There's no evidence of a cell here (I'm sure the FBI is busy gathering evidence regarding this as we speak). If such evidence emerges then of course I'd change my opinion.
There probably is a phenomenon where men in their 20's go cuckoo for cocoa puffs and decide to start bumping off one or more people to avenge the wrongs of the world. I don't know if this guy's thought processes are going to make any more sense than Hinckley's ideas that shooting Reagan would impress Jodie Foster (who irony or ironies turned out to be lesbian!)
There are two legitimate points remaining however.
1. If this guy was already going off the deep end, what sort of garbage did the local mosques implant in his mush brain to push him even closer to the edge?
2. I tend to agree that the MSM has been tiptoeing around the issue as is their wont.
I just am not sure that this is "terrorism" in the AQ, 9/11 sense of the word.
Thanks again for this post (and the ping).
Not a word about the terrorist's motives...hmmm. If this had been a "hate crime," Chancellor Moeser would have been waxing eloquently about the need for tolerance and understanding.
It would be very amusing to see some energetic lawyer rake back through the history of UNC-CH -- or most any other liberal university -- and bring a serioius antidiscrimination lawsuit against it for years and years of slapping down any and every hint (and there are very few) of aggressive self-defense on campus of the specifically white or Christian community while allowing various minorities to swim in a sea of racial demogoguery, errect their own cultural centers, ethnic studies programs, etc. where hate speech against Christian whites (and, increasingly against Jews) is the order of the day.
"Not by guns, but with information. Knowledge is the key weapon to fight these Animals."
Exactly right...I was at a party yesterday and a SINGLE person there was aware of this terrorist act. The public's apathy and the MSM's obvious bias can only be countered with information (as you point out so succinctly).
Do you think this story will grow some legs on Monday? (Thank goodness for cyberspace!)
