The removal of the Confederate flag from Amherst County's official seal has upset Southern heritage groups, who contend residents weren't told of the change. County officials acknowledge the image was quietly removed in August 2004 to avoid an uproar.

Now, point out where the Articles of Confederate required unanimous consent to approve treaties.
Nothing in particular, except those Yankees (the wrong kind) will keep on heading down there by thousands, and the more liberal pinkos depart from here the better. You guys can deal with them for a change :)
As someone else pointed out, if Grant was a drunk then it means our lush beat your sainted Bobby Lee. And Braxton Bragg. And John Pemberton. And Leonidas Polk. And Pierre Beauregard. And every other southern general sent against him. Doesn't say much for your sober leadership, does it?
Who is ""we"?
Man I would love to see stand's library. Betcha could learn a heap there.
I never said it was the norm but it is far from unusual and the Confederacy lived on being able to do just that for over two years.
The suggestion stands.
And "binding themselves" means?
Amd being recognized as the United States by the King of Frances means?
The United States spoke with one voice AS A NATION to the rest of the world and sovereignty within their borders has never been in dispute.
You must remember, he was one of my ancestors. I never said Grant was dishonorable. Just that he didn't hesitate to sacrifice men to achieve his goal, regardless of loss of life.
It will be harder on his mom, I think. But he is getting a football scholarship, to an Ivy League College. He would be stupid not to go :)
Regardless of his flaws, he still can't hold a candle to Lee. Lee was a better tactician, hands down.
They don't want to live in the South.waaaay to conservative. :)
Amd being recognized as the United States by the King of Frances means?
Not because Louis said so, but that the Continental Congress did not bark does indicate that they had no problem with it.
These are the sort of acrobatics that are required to maintain the Farber myth of a binding Union. You'll notice that thirteen and United are both modifiers of the word states. Takeit insists that Louis "recognized" them as the United States. It's dishonesty - just as if I were to say he recognized them as "the thirteen states."
It's rather telling that Farber wrote Lincoln's Constitution with the goal of vetting all of the actions of our 16th president, and in spite of all of his research, the best he could do was a brief discussion of the "metaphysical concept" of Union with a "secret legal potency." The presumption being that he did his homework, tried harder than either of you to come up with something concrete, and failed just the same.
No, you never said that. So in your eyes then Grant was just an honorable butcher who squandered the lives of his men with total disregard. Thanks for the clarification. That makes it sooooo much better.
Bowdoin's not Ivy League but in terms of status and reputation there isn't much difference between them. And it's not the kind of school to take jocks just because they're jocks. Obviously your son has a good head on his shoulders. Now I just have to work on his old man. :)
In many respects, though, after the war, severe alchoholism wouldn't be a bad crutch to lean on for Grant supporters attempting to avoid accusations that he ran the most corrupt and abusive administration in American history.
No, you prefer to describe him as coked up. Big difference. </sarcasm>
As was said, he earned a reputation as a butcher by sending men into the meatgrinders that Lee and others had put in place.
Thanks to the southron myth machine. As McPherson pointed out in his book, both Grant and Lee commanded army-sized units for about the same length of time - Grant from February 1862 and Lee from June 1862. But Lee's casualties for the entire war were higher than Grant's. Grant accepted casualties when he had to, maneuvered when he could, and did not lightly accept the lives lost under his command. Had Lee been placed in exactly the same circumstances with exactly the same resources I honestly don't think that his tactics would have been much different. Grant was out to end the war. In order to do that he had to destroy the main confederate army at the time. In order to accomplish that he found the army and fought it to the end. What other way was there?
Don't let the school fool ya. My son is as proud of his heritage as I am. He will be taking his ANV Battle Flag to the dorm :)
I was referring to the school as Ivy League, because they play Dartmouth, and all those Massachusetts "Yankee" Schools "ugh" :)
You misunderstood. One can be a General that is cold when makig battlefield decisions, and still be honorable. Grant had honor.
you have (as usual) posted NOTHING either FACTUAL or which required THOUGHT. just more of your usual BILGE & personal attacks.
PITY!
