What Is the Greatest Musical Work of All Time?
3/1/2006 | Reaganesque

Posted on 03/01/2006 7:54:55 PM PST by Reaganesque

I was sitting here tonight listening to Mozart's Requiem and I got to thinking: what do I consider to be the best work of music ever? For my part, Mozart's work really does the trick for me when I need to be re-energized. Therefore, I believe that his Requiem is the greatest work of all time. There just isn't another work that is as powerful and passionate. When the chorus sings the final "Amen" at the end of "Lacrimosa" I get the feeling that he knew it was the last thing he would ever write. It gives me chills at times.

Other favorites are:

Handel's Messiah

The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky

"We had joy, we had fun, We had seasons in the sun..."

Thanks, when I was a little kid and my sisters were in their 'The world is a horrible place' phase they played that, "Billy, Don't be a Hero", and "Wildfire" all the time. All of those songs to this day depress the hell out of me.

It's hard for me to be specific about modern music. I like progressive rock from the 60's and 70's, film scores, bluegrass, and too much more to be mentioned. I can talk about music for days with the right person.

One of my favorite groups from recent years is the Moody Blues. I like Alison Krauss and Union Station, and Nickel Creek as well.

There is a lot of good music out there. Unfortunately, you have to almost go looking to find good "new" music.

"Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts Of Life" by Bobby Bare

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am
Make me a piece in your master game plan
Free from the earthly tempestion below
I’ve got the will, Lord if you’ve got the toe.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Take all the brothers who’ve gone on before
And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door
All the departed dear loved ones of mine
Stick’em up front in the offensive line.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Yeah, Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

An old Texas Aggie song I learned back in 1940.

"I'd rather be an Aggie a mean so and so than be from any other school and rolling in dough, I'd rather be out on the highway thumbing a ride than have Miss Gretta Garbo for my blushing bride.

I'm true to the colors of Maroon and White whether we win or lose or are in the wrong or right and if we lose old pal you will hear me say let's go out to Ed's and drink our cares away, I'd rather be an Aggie no shirt or no tie, I guess I'll be an Aggie til the day that I die!

Musical music: Brigadoon. No one ever performs Brigadoon anymore and the music is beautiful.

Check out Eric Whitacre. New composer. Check out "A Boy and a Girl"

I heard the St. Olaf choir sing this and you could hear a pin drop.

Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see.

I have to protest that statement, I think that is a great song. "And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free..."

I think the sentiment expressed in the song is beautiful. I think the song itself is, musically-speaking,...well,...crap. ;-)
