Smoking Ban Advancing In New Hampshire
United Pro Smoker's Newsletter ^ | Feb 23, 2006

New Hampshire is one step closer to a statewide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars.

The House Commerce Committee voted Wednesday to recommend the full House approve a ban.

Current state law allows smoking in restaurants with fewer than 50 seats.

Larger restaurants must have ventilation systems and a segregated non-smoking area. But supporters of the ban say that does not protect workers.

If approved, New Hampshire would be the 12th state to institute a statewide ban.

All the other five New England states have a statewide smoking ban.

What are the seven non-New England states? I am pretty sure it's still okay in restaurants and bars in Texas. Although there is a city ordinance in San Antonio preventing it.

It's hard to believe that smoking is still permitted in restaurants in other states.

California's 100% statewide workplace smoking law was passed in 1994, and fully enacted in 1998.

I remember the bad old days when you had to change tables to avoid chain smokers.

I do find this ironic and pretty funny. However, I am in favor of it. I experienced a situation yesterday - smokers smoking right in front of BOTH entrances - I had to walk through smoke to get in and then again upon my exit. I choose not to smell like that and yet I end up smelling like it anyway - where is my freedom? Hey, smoke all you want at home in your car and far enough way from the entrance to non-smoking buildings, I don't care, I just don't want to smell like that. I love this little trick, I've seen smokers take in a big drag, pitch their butts, walk inside then exhale - they aren't fooling anyone and it is just flat out rude.

Flak-jacket on and buttoned....8^)

I've had the same complaint. Even on the elevators, or when leaving the smoking section to check out at a restaurant, cupping the smoking butt. It is rude. And so is dropping butts everywhere.

HOWEVER, when I smoked there were many, many times when the ash cans were filled with everything that does NOT belong there...candy wraps, soda cans, you name it, even dirty diapers! That's rude, too!

In the last 5 years I've buried two smokers. While I miss them, I don't miss dealing with the smoke during visits. But your right, dodging those orally-fixated stink pots huddled around the outside of every office building is annoying. Don't they realize they smell horrendously bad. Always a good life decision. Those last few years of a smokers life are not fun or filled with much peace or comfort either.

Shields up!

It is certainly great not having to breathe smoke in our California restaurants. I remember the bad old days of "No Smoking" sections. Some wag once said it was like asking if you wanted to swim in the "No Chlorine" end of the pool.

Lots of things in the air can cause lung cancer.  It's a crap shoot.

I know.  Maine forced a total smoking ban in January of 2004.  I no longer go to restaurants or taverns for a meal.

Take out or delivery or friends homes.  But I really miss going out for a meal.

Thanks but I'm not sure I get it -- are these where smoking is banned or allowed? I can see no smoking in the workplace before banning it in restaurants and bars. After a meal is like the second-best time to smoke, isn't it? ;o)

That's right.  Think of all that vehicle exhaust you breath in daily.  Pretty nasty stuff.

The list shows just where each state stands on the forced smoking bans.  They show what places they have banned smoking.

And yes, I really enjoy a cigarette after a wonderful meal with my coffee.

Even worse when you suck it down with some burning crap, wrapped in paper. And to actually choose to suck smoke in, that takes the cake.

It makes no sense to me that restaurants and bars would come before the workplace. I rarely took smoke breaks and I read elsewhere where you said anyone taking 20 min. smoke breaks doesn't have enough work!
