The Bush administration will reverse its decision to allow a Dubai company based in the United Arab Emirates to gain control over several key U.S. ports, the Fox News Channel's Brit Hume predicted on Sunday.
"I don't think the administration will be able to sustain this," Hume told "Fox News Sunday." "I think it will have to reverse itself in some way or create some entity that stands between the company and the management of the ports."
"I just don't think [the decision] can stand," he added. "It doesn't sound good to let some Arab shieks to be in charge of our ports - that's what it comes down to."
Appearing on the same program, Sen. Lindsey Graham slammed the ports decision, saying, "It's unbelievably tone deaf politically at this point in our history, four years after 9/11, to entertain the idea of turning port security over to a company based in the U.A.E., who avows to destroy Israel."
In a decision announced last week, the Bush administration's Committee on Foreign Investment approved the purchase of six major U.S. ports by the U.A.E.-based Dubai Ports World.
The move set off a firestorm of criticism, with skeptics complaining that banks in the U.A.E. have helped launder money for terrorists and that the country itself was home to Marwan al Shehhi, the Sept. 11 hijacker who piloted United Airlines Flight 175 into Tower 2 of the World Trade Center.
On Friday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended the Dubai deal, telling a Mideast news outlet: "There was a thorough review. It was decided that this could be done and done safely."
Yemen is a Russian backed terrorist state.
The UAE and Yemem are two different countries.
Since it's the right thing to do, I wouldn't count on it.
"There's no gray area with him, it's just black and white."
Johnnie is entitled to her opinion until it becomes a matter of urgent national security. National Security only has one opinion, one rule, one choice, one vote, one way, and that is to do whatever it takes protect our ports and our borders. Johnnie wishes these creeds of NSA charged with protecting us to be flexible. Johnnie figures since mostly demos are speaking out against allowing muslim(terrorists) to run our strategic ports, it must be a good thing. That's beyond sickening. It's a barf alert of gargantuan proportions.
I say we shouldn't care which party prevents this national disaster from happening. So long as it is prevented. And yea, if I had my rathers, I would wish that the repubs were the one's screaming the loudest preventing this national security fiasco. Though some are like Sen Graham of SC. As to the rest, their silence speaks volumes.
Nice post. It's a keeper!
Thank you.
If they don't it's just going to be another issue used against them next November. That appears to be something the party hacks like MNJohnnie don't get.
No.
great post
Welcome To FREE REPUBLIC
Sounds like a combination of cronyism mixed with globalism and you're right it doesn't smell good.
This is nothing but pathetic grandstanding by leftists who want to appear to be concerned about national security, while working actively to undermine it. UAE security will likely be tougher than any US company that hires $10 a hour "rent-a-cops."
Who cares about the left? If this sham deal is going to be stopped it'll be done by pressure coming from conservatives. The fact the democrats are agreeing with us will ultimately have no bearing on the outcome since it won't even be put to a vote. Like the Harriet Meirs nomination Bush will be forced to see the light and change his ways.
Republicans sold the British company to the UAE company?
How did the GOP manage that?
Now, I understand what is going on is this company is buying a British Company which currently operates our ports and getting our six ports in the deal. I'm not certain how that is a benefit to us or why the British, who have their own problems, think it's a good deal for the UK.
However, I have no say in the matter and we'll all have to wait and see who is right on this issue. I hope the President and Condi are correct, but ... I look at the border situation and have to wonder.
I always thought Kennedy's assination was indicative of a major turning point in this country, more than anyone ever imagined at the time, and the hippy generation that followed only led us further down a perilous path.
That's the tip of the money trail.
