Florida Senate: Republicans Supporting Harris

Survey of 500 Likely Voters

February 6, 2006

Election 2006

Florida Senator

Bill Nelson (D) 49% Katherine Harris (R) 40% RasmussenReports.com

February 14, 2006--In recent weeks, several Republican political leaders in Florida have stopped trying to push Katherine Harris out of the U.S. Senate campaign and decided to support her efforts. Governor Jeb Bush, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings, and members of the state's Congressional delegation have indicated that they will campaign for Harris.

Rank-and-file Republicans have made the adjustment as well. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of GOP voters now plan to vote for Harris in November. That's up from 59% in early January and matches Senator Bill Nelson's support among Democrats.

Overall, however, Harris still trails Nelson by nine percentage points, 49% to 40% (see crosstabs). Among voters not affiliated with either the Republicans or Democrats, Harris trails badly, 64% to 18%.

Forty-four percent (44%) of Florida voters now have a favorable opinion of Harris, up from 34% a month ago. Forty percent (40%) have an unfavorable opinion.

Nelson is viewed favorably by 53% and unfavorably by 27%.

Who says I am bashing Harris.

Just using your own logic. If I'm promoting her, then you're bashing her. Period.

Go do your own research. I'm tired of you.

I am definitely trying to condemn her position but to bash someone would to (For example) point out she wears too much makeup or some other silly personal criticism.

Arguing policy, especially something as important as supplying resources Americans need, is not bashing or a pet issue.

I truly believe that she can win.

Hey Julie:

What a difference one poll can make with our resident defeatists. LOL!

Now I see them hedging their bets and even, albeit begrudgingly, offering that Harris may indeed have a chance. I even saw where one of them, who was adamant about Harris being down 25 points in some other stupid poll, is now saying that he knew the poll was wrong in the first place. Too funny.

Like I said before, the public perception of Harris up to this point has been shaped mainly by a hostile media. This early in the election cycle it's foolish to draw any negative conclusions about this race when the republican machine, that dominates Florida politics, is just now supporting her candidacy and most voters aren't even paying attention yet. I expect the numbers to tighten further.

Semi-Rant on:
Why is pointing out an opponent's voting record going negative? I think saying someone molests collies is negative, saying they voted to raise your taxes and extend the AWB, for example is merely highlighting what they have been up to doing the job you sent them to do. I also think the conservatives in general and the GOP in particular have got to quit letting ourselves be defined by the other side everyone points at negative campaigning, I seldom agree that what they are raising as negative is an example of negative. The truth hurts some times but politics is not for the faint of heart.

What is Harris's alternative, continue to prop up tyrants?

Harris supports drilling in ANWR. Unfortunately, given Florida's dependence on tourism, no senator from this state can support drilling off shore and expect to be elected or reelected. Knowing that kamikaze is not Harris' style, it's ridiculous to claim she's supporting tyrants anywhere because she won't commit political suicide.

Republican politicians can't be analyzed, just blindly pull the lever for an (R), eh.

Are you sure your comments are about analysis or, are you a third-party voter who continues to get nothing he wants?

I still have trouble figuring out why Bill McCollum fared so poorly in that race.

A congressman with nearly two decades of accomplishment behind him, a conservative leader on issues ranging from law & order, to immigration, abortion, affirmative action, and even a house manager during the Clinton impeachment saga, one of the most outstanding in my opinion, next to Henry Hyde and James Sensenbrenner.

Why did such an articulate, compelling candidate do so much worse than President Bush in that state?

"...no senator from this state can support drilling off shore and expect to be elected or reelected."

Why not?

Of course Harris is for drilling in someone else's State. Heck, a lot of polls show most Floridians are against drilling in ANWR. Should every Senate candidate from Florida default to that position?

The inability to frame a debate is lack of leadership qualities. Just saying "I am against drilling" just because environmentalist have taken over the issue shows lack of leadership and weakness. What is better for the State? For the country? For the people?

Rising gas cost, dependence on foreign oil, having tyrants of other countries prosper (Due to our dependence) because Floridians are too ignorant along with their representatives, etc...

If America was more self reliant on our energy needs one would think we would not have to bend backwards for the Saudis, Chavez and the rest of OPEC hence propping up all those "bastions of freedom".

Another thing, I 'might' vote for Harris instead of Nelson but will never openly support (Verbally or monetary).

I hate to hold my nose but I will still point out this issue regarding Harris.

As for third parties if Republicans keep sucking the tit of big government and regulations they will start losing elections. Pretty soon conservative are doing to split.

Keep supporting lukewarmness and big government (Like it or not), it always turns into vomit. Sometimes people must take a stand and send the party a message. Too bad you are willing to sacrifice conservative principles so victorious wishy washy moderates can play with your hard earned dollars. (How many truly conservative Senators are there, eh?) Yet you want more moderate crap.

"The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it." P.J. O'Rourke

Much too close to the truth.

Sean Hannity mentioned on his radio show yesterday that he was "heading to Florida to do a fund-raiser for Katherine Harris". I'm afraid I don't know any more details. Hope she starts bringing in some serious $$$ soon...

IIRC, both senators from Alaska are in favor of drilling in ANWR.

You can find hypocrisy with every politician. I like winning elections and getting most of what I want rather than losing them and getting nothing. To demand that Harris adopt a position that is akin to political suicide is just absurd. The only folks who seem to support kamikaze politics are the radical lefties who now control the Dem party (thank goodness!) and the third-party types who frequent FR.

I'd much rather be pragmatic and have power and influence than be an unappeasable and be powerless and impotent. At least with the latter, I suppose, you can show up here, whine about the lack of idealism, and feel superior.

Looking at the current state of DC I could care less if I was getting scraps. The whole system is corrupt and getting worse by the day.

And in your misguided mindset I don't feel superior, I look at my two kids and realize the kind of government they are going to get.

Unfortunately sometimes it takes a Jimmy Carter to wake the people up. So go ahead and get your scraps, it's a good thing our founding fathers never thought like you and embraced idealism rather than moderation.

Run Pat, run?

I look at my two kids and realize the kind of government they are going to get.

I like Roberts and Alito. I also like the very conservative judges Bush has appointed to our appeals courts. I also like the fact that, finally, a free world leader has taken on Islamofacism. I like my tax cuts since it allows me to save more for my kids college and may even allow me to leave my wealth to them instead of the government. You must be missing the incredible economic growth we are experiencing that makes us the envy of the world. Yes, the spending is a lot more than I'd like. Since 2001, our external debt has increased by $2 trillion. Our household net worth however, has increased by more than $10 trillion during the same time period. You don't need to be a math major to see the benefits here. If your net worth was growing 5 times faster than your debt, would you be happier?

Even if you only see bad everywhere, you must be deriving some pleasure from watching the Dem party implode as they habitually genuflect to the demands of the radical idealists who control their party.

So go ahead and get your scraps,

LOL. You're a cup is always half empty kind of guy, aren't you? Don't you know that Republicans are happier than their rivals?

It's a good thing our founding fathers never thought like you and embraced idealism rather than moderation.

You mean like George Washington?

George Washington

Yeah, those pragmatists really screwed things up, eh? ROFL!!
