Jury: Airline not racist
seacoastonline ^

Posted on 02/13/2006 11:51:51 AM PST by SmoothTalker

"A jury on Friday said Southwest Airlines did not racially discriminate against an overweight passenger when she was asked to buy a second seat on her flight."

"The jury deliberated for a little over an hour before finding against Nadine Thompson, who sued Southwest in federal court. She claimed that she was singled out because she is black and that the airline’s "customer of size" policy was unfairly applied to her after she boarded a flight at Manchester Airport in June 2003."

" Southwest’s policy states that a "customer of size" is someone who can’t sit in a seat without having the armrest raised and is sitting on part of the adjacent seat. Thompson, who said she doesn’t consider herself a customer of size, didn’t challenge the policy; rather, she claimed, it allows any random employee to operate "in a discriminatory way about that policy." "

"Joel Drake, a Southwest employee, testified earlier Friday that Thompson accused him of being a "motherf--- racist pig" and wished that his family would die from cancer when he tried to explain the company’s policy to her."

If a car was built with the same seat and leg space as is available in the cheap seat section of airplanes that manufacturer wouldnt sell a dozen of them.

They try to jam as many people in their flying boxes as they can and could care less about comfort. Make the damned seats a little bigger and a heavy p[erson wouldnt need two seats.

As for discrimination because of race that part is BS and she knows it, but what the hell is the sense of being black if you dont get to play the card.

I'm short but because I have Restless Leg Syndrome, I need as much legroom as a much taller person. Since I generally know way in advance when I'll be flying, I get myself an aisle seat. That way, I can get up whenever I need to, and have at least one armrest that I don't have to share.

But I do have a question though -- if a huge person takes up half of my seat, should I try to get them to pay for the half of my seat that I can't use due to their size?

WTF kind of name is "LaNita" [sic]? Was dad a programmer and just had to use camel case for her name? Nah, I doubt the thinking behind her name was that intelligent.

That sounds like a good idea, but the airline I normally fly has only Boeing 737-700s, which have two rows of 3 seats. To make the seats any wider would mean they would have to only have 2 seats to a side, which if they did it for every seat (one class only on these planes) would mean only 2/3 of the capacity per flight.

But you're right. Sitting in those seats is like spending 4 hours sitting in the back seat of my old Nissan Sentra, behind me in the driver's seat. Except that you'd stll have more room side to side.

Being fat and ridiculed for it seems like the sport of the day. People still think derogatory fat comments are acceptable. Let's see some of them substitute the word black or Jewish to their comments instead of fat.

Let's watch them run for cover.

Do they only screw fat people when the plane is packed full? In other words if a plane is leaving without a full capacity do they just let fat people sit where there is no other passenger or do they screw them either way??

This fat chick can take it, since I'm a) aware that I need to lose 50 pounds and b) actively working at it.

Plus, there's a very fine line between humor and bashing. Ask a Muslim about those cartoons.

I'm thinking she didn't slim down for the trial and the juey got a good look at her sitting in her chair during the trial. In the jury room, they probably all imagined her sitting next to them on a long flight.
