MILWAUKEE One woman here killed a friend after they argued over a brown silk dress. A man killed a neighbor whose 10-year-old son had mistakenly used his dish soap. Two men argued over a cellphone, and pulling out their guns, the police say, killed a 13-year-old girl in the crossfire.
While violent crime has been at historic lows nationwide and in cities like New York, Miami and Los Angeles, it is rising sharply here and in many other places across the country.
And while such crime in the 1990's was characterized by battles over gangs and drug turf, the police say the current rise in homicides has been set off by something more bewildering: petty disputes that hardly seem the stuff of fistfights, much less gunfire or stabbings.
Suspects tell the police they killed someone who "disrespected" them or a family member, or someone who was "mean mugging" them, which the police loosely translate as giving a dirty look. And more weapons are on the streets, giving people a way to act on their anger.
Police Chief Nannette H. Hegerty of Milwaukee calls it "the rage thing."
"We're seeing a very angry population, and they don't go to fists anymore, they go right to guns," she said...

A large part of the problem, the police say, is simply more guns on the streets as gun laws have loosened around the country. In Philadelphia, Commissioner Johnson said, since the state made it easier to get a gun permit in 1985, the number of people authorized to carry a gun in the city has risen from 700 to 32,000.
How many of those were involved in murders, the NY Times doesn't say.
Interesting article:)The NYTimes has absolutely ZERO credibility with me.
reading the NY locals is like reading Steven Kings discarded scratch pads. The stuff that happens here is to sick to be believed.
If the NYTimes is running this story, there's a reason behind it. I'm thinking of Hillary Clinton at this point....
This sounds suspiciously like cherry-picking examples to support a preconceived agenda.

I can't help but think that our national obsession with being 'dissed' and ones' 'civil rights' being anything one feels like doing is somehow correlated to the schools' national obsession with self-esteem.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
Let me see. "Disrespected"? "Mean mugging"? 'He bumped into me,' 'He looked at my girl the wrong way,', "even after the person gives up, the guy with the gun shoots him anyway. We didn't have as much of that before."
The article dances around ethnic and racial and illegal immigration issues related to this reported upsurge in murders, but strangely the reasons are still portrayed as mysterious and unknowable. It couldn't be that PC is preventing an esteemed news source such as the New York Times from frank and honest reporting, could it?
Surprised that Cincinnati is not on this list.
It does not surprise me because it seems as though the entitlement mentality of certain populations who breed like rabbits and have no real responsibility have not been taught civilized behavior by the very nanny government who feeds their dependent behavior. You can't blame the guns on that one.
As a resident of Illinois the fiefdom of Daley I can tell you why crime might be rising in Milwaukee. Daley has been succesful in gentrification of alot of neighborhoods, and in effect sending his criminals out of Chicago.
What I get from this story -- is that we should arm EVERYONE in all the "Liberal Enclave" cities, and step back...
The leftist degenerates will off themselves...
They would even appreciate the fact we've accepted the Darwin theory and working towards natural selection of the most fit....to survive.
Semper Fi
They have a RINO mayor...who's a good ol' boy that has squandered money on parks, pools, and a white elephant convention center...while letting the police dept. go without.
FWIW-
I have no doubt that the lady police chief in Milwaukee just wants to make sure she keeps her citizens disarmed in her ass-kissing of the Democrat governor. Police chiefs are politicians, as opposed to being actual cops, and I'll even venture that lady police chiefs are among the worst of a bad lot.
Kudos to NYC. Folks put the place down, but it works as a city.
So much for "Just give the robber what he wants."
Big uptick in Nashville murders ping.
I'm surprised they forgot to add that it's all George Bush's fault.
And don't forget that Dick Cheney just added to the tally of the wounded in Texas : ^ )
