A Portland Police officer who was injured while firing a handgun has filed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the manufacturers of the gun and the ammunition.
Officer Florin B. Pirv was taking a qualification test in March 2004 with a .45 caliber Glock 21 when the “breech/cartridge feed ramp fractured, causing backward propulsion of hot gases, hot air, and shrapnel to be blown into Pirv’s face, body, and hands,” according to the suit.
The lawsuit names Glock and two ammunition-makers, Federal Cartridge Company and Alliant Technosystems, also known as ATK. Glock is based in Georgia. The ammunition-makers are based in Minnesota.
None returned phone calls and emails seeking comment.
Pirv was one of two Portland officers injured while firing .45-caliber Glocks in March 2004, prompting Portland Police Chief Derrick Foxworth to order the recall of the weapons carried by 230 officers.
The bureau replaced them with 9mm Glocks.
Pirv’s suit seeks $50,000 in compensatory damages, $3 million for pain and suffering and $50 million in punitive damages.
Pirv is assigned to a patrol shift, according to a Portland Police spokeswoman.
I guess he won't be happy until Glock engraves silly warnings all over the gun.

I have that type of Glock in question and I reload for it, I'm willing to bet the case has been overused and got thin, also the Glock barrels do leave a portion of the case exposed that can case a rupture especially if its a hot load. I did buy an aftermarket barrel that drops in and uses the .45 case but is necked down to become a .400 CORBON.
A .45 recoil isnt bad really but I use the Glock 10mm as my personal protection. My favorite though is the single stack SIG P220 .45 very nice built.
I have several 9mm but recently I have felt the need to have more stopping power and more rounds aviable like double stack mags. Hi cap .45 mags are a bit wide for a small handed person and having only 8 rounds is just not safe insurance especially if you have crazed multiple assailants.
best round for a woman, .357 SIG for a guy that can handle recoil a good 10mm. Glocks are good cause they are ready to fire right then and are simple simple firearms.
Buying a .50AE or anything else of the super macho handguns is asking for big trouble, the rounds are hard to manage unless you have the strength, the round which if you miss your target and you most likely will, have tremendous collaterial damage such as penetrating walls and such.

My husband has a couple of Glocks, but I prefer a revolver. You're right about 357 for the ladies. I carry a Smith lg frame 357 with Crimson Trace Laser and my Valentine present about 5 years ago was a Smith Trail Boss, which I love! I have had several automatics over the years and experienced a few jams. Hubby says Glocks have never jammed on him, but I wouldn't want to take the chance, if my safety depended on it....It must be a "female thing" LOL
The most painful handgun I ever shot was a TC custom by J.D.Jones. A 444 Marlin with magna porting. NEVER again :) My TC is a 7mm Int R and that's just fine, but MR.Proud Conservative thought I might like the 444 for..DUH

Granted, I HATE Glocks (bulky handles, high recoil). Nevertheless, this case involved using the wrong ammo if I recall.
I'm not a big Glock fan, although they work fine for a lot of folks and spare parts/magazines are very easy to find.
ATK owns Federal. They also own CCI and a quite a few other companies. Do a Google search.
Feed ramp failure?? Of all the autos that I own, I cannot imagine a single one of them having such a failure.

I am not a fan of Glocks but a feed ramp failure?? That doesn't make sense unless the guy was using high pressure ammo or monkeyed with the weapon.
They should have gone to SIG Sauers. I've had two Glocks come apart on me and I've personally seen nearly half a dozen others that Kb'd... in 9mm, .40, 10mm, and .45.
Shooting a Glock is risking your life.

There's a lot of misconceptions out there.
A .45 is easier to handle than the .40 S&W.
The larger base and slower velocities of the .45 equal a softer recoil than the sharp impulse of the .40
None of the parts in question, involved in this, are plastic.
I could make a couple of statements based on that, and your comment, but will refrain.
Get a Knoxx Spec-Ops stock for your 870. Ruins the classic shotgun lines, but will reduce recoil to M4 status.
nobody makes a +P+ for .45acp. they do make it for .38special, 9mm and .38super. there IS however, a company down in TX that's making a .45super. the .45super uses the same size case as .45acp, and could be accidentally loaded into a regular .45 acp gun. but it's unlikely due to the fact that .45 super is not popular.
you can load your own .45acp to +P+ levels, but you're going to be spending alot totally rebuilding your gun so it will take the pressures.
I get my Federal 45 Hydrashok from cheaperthandirt.com or outdoormarksman.com. (And I shoot it from a Glock 36, too)
