West Hartford-WTNH, Feb. 7, 2006 6:25 PM) _ A West Hartford Middle School falls victim to vandals and now police want to know who is responsible.
Police say they are taking this incident very seriously. The West Hartford Police Juvenile Unit is investigating the incident.
The principal Sedgwick Middle School also sent a note home to parents to inform them of the vandalism.
"We do not want to alarm the public because we do feel that this is a juvenile situation but we also do want to let the public know that the police department and the school are taking this very seriously," says Captain Lori Coppinger, West Hartford Police.
It happened on Monday. Police say there are over 100 acts of vandalism. Swastikas were painted on the school's walls, as well as graphic racial slurs that are described as threatening and evil. Police are investigating this as a hate crime.
"Situations like hate crimes the courts tend to put stiffer fines and penalties on that. It is something to be taken seriously because in a situation like this you do not want it to escalate into something else," says Coppinger.
As soon as the school found the graffiti, they began to clean it off the walls, even before the police got there . Crews worked throughout the night to erase all traces before school started on Tuesday morning.
"We have not had this kind of thing happen before in our school. It is very disturbing. We have spent most of the year trying to help the students embrace the diversity in our school, so this is very disappointing to me," says Dr. Benjamin Skaught, Principal.
The letter from the principal says the incident happened between 3:55 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. Monday.
$100.00 says it's a fake hate crime.

A local CAIR spokesperson immediately swung into action, issuing a statement condemning the JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS. < /sarc>

Back in my day, the graphic racial slurs were more accommodating and sweet.
You almost never hear them say this about a murder or robbery.
FYI, West Hartford is an upscale, largely Jewish suburb of Hartford with a growing immigrant population , many of whom are well paid professionals from Asia and Russia. My wife taught in an elementary school not far from this middle school.
Hate crime for this school but still nary a mention of a hate crime in burning Christian churches. They say they want to nip this in the bud before it escalates. Says a lot about not classifying church burnings as hate crimes.
I guess there is loving vandalism as opposed to hate vandalism. Same with robbery and murder.
Was there a teachers union meeting around 4ish on the day in question?

Somehow I don't think you'll get many takers on your bet. The odds are too much in your favor.
But, you forget, the churchs burned were white churchs.
Ah, I see your confusion.
Let me explain.
If you murder someone and he is the same as you, say, 25, non-minority, heterosexual and Christian, then you go to prison for 20 years. You called him EVERY name in the book when you killed him.
If you murder someone and he is a minority OR homosexual OR non-Christian you go to prison for LONGER because you NO DOUBT killed him BECAUSE he was a minority, homosexual or non-Christian. IF you did indeed insult him as you murdered him, via his color, religion or sexual orientation, then your crime is WORSE.
If the shoe is on the other foot and some minority, homosexual and non-Christian murders you, HE goes to prison but gets NO EXTRA TIME, even if he killed you because of your race, religion or sexual orientation AND insulted you thusly as he murdered you.
That's the deal in this country. No justice for the non-minority, heterosexual Christian when it comes to "hate crimes."
I once had it explained to me, regarding this and affirmative action. It goes like this. Minorities, homosexuals and non-Christians are, by virtue of their smaller numbers, STILL in the non-power position in this country so they are never ABLE to be racist, bigots or heterophobic.
Hate Crime: The only crime that
a) Requires reading the criminal's mind
b) Can exclusively be committed by a white, straight Christian male.

c) The crime that a white, straight Christan male CANNOT be the victim of
strawman argument I'm afraid.
Blacks are arrested for hate crimes at a higher rate than whites.
