Reuters Additional Information

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police at the U.S. Capitol arrested anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan on Tuesday, shortly before President Bush was to give his annual State of the Union speech, a police spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman, Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, said she had no immediate details.

Sheehan had been invited to be a guest at the address to a joint session of Congress by U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey, a California Democrat.

Sheehan, who became a central figure for the U.S. anti-war movement after her soldier son Casey was killed in the Iraq war, won wide attention with an anti-war vigil outside Bush's Texas ranch.

CNN said Sheehan was arrested after unveiling a banner and was being held on Capitol Hill for about an hour, which would keep her away from the address, which was set to start at 9 p.m. EST.

Sheehan and other activists were arrested in September for protesting outside the White House without a permit, a misdemeanor that carriers a $50 fine.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious.

But it cannot survive treason from within.
An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known, and he carries his banners openly.

But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely,
his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys,
heard in the very hall of government itself.

For the traitor appears no traitor.

He speaks in the accents familiar to his victims,
and he wears their face and their garments,
and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in hearts of men.

He rots the soul of a nation.

He works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city.

He infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.

A Murderer Is Less To Be Feared."

Cicero, 43 B.C.

Look at Lynn Woolsey's record

It can't be uglier than her mug.

That face is built-in birth control.

Nowadays when anybody dares to tell truth to power, he or she is either arrested and thrown in jail or ridiculed as insane.

Sooo..."Mom", you caught Patty gone and you snuck outta the unguarded basement, huh?

One year in jail? Community service would be better. You know, cleaning park benches and pooper scooping park grounds. She might be really good at that!

Sgt. Schneider says she was wearing a T-shirt with a slogan on it and was asked to cover it up. Sheehan did not cover it up and she was arrested

Sorry but that is just wrong.Wearing a t shirt is protected by the first amendment and its just as wrong to arrest her for that as it was for clinton to have freepers arrested for holding signs up as clintons motorcade passed by and for having those two protesters arrested for saying you suck.

Libertarian ping.To be added or removed from my ping list freepmail me or post a message here

Yes, she was sitting down in the gallery and took her jacket off - when they saw the shirt they told her to put the jacket back on - she refused - they arrested her.

She had a banner with her - but there was no mention of her trying to display it.

now, she could be just pretending to be a total dimwit. it could be part of her cover story, if she has one, which we cannot and do not know one way or the other. just saying. just bear in mind that she has never been publicly identified as, nor has anyone ever publicly accused her of being, a covert agent assigned to infiltrate the antiwar movement. we just can't know, can we?

Did you type this with a straight face?!?

"Sorry but that is just wrong."

Tell you what, I'll split the flame fest with you.

As a legitimately invited guest (with admittedly bad taste in formal wear) this is not disruptive behavior and she should have just been ignored.

Whats next, arresting guest that don't applaud?

Wearing the T-shirt may not have been disruptive in and of itself, but it was in bad taste & highly inappropriate.

While I too have my criticisms of Bush, I would show some respect for him & the occasion.

MM is a hit and split troll, pure and simple. We are spinning our wheels trying to engage her in the debate. Any one of us could take her to task with "one hand tied behind our back."

Now, back to topic, the Ditch Witch.
