The barrel tends to overheat, but I have had discussions with many FReepers who have had no such trouble. It sure is great for varmints! Those Palmetto bugs don't stand a chance...

I am going to purchase an AK-47. I was wondering who makes the best one? I am also curious as to what to look for as far as wear and tear.

I have a Norinco MAK-90 that was really cheap, accurate and is fun to shoot. I bought it the first time I heard the words "president-elect Bill Clinton".
Robinson Armament's VEPR models or Global Trades AK's are probably going to be your best bet if you looking for quality, reasonably priced AK type rifles. Both are made here in America from imported parts.

It seems a fairly large number of Romanian made guns with milled receivers are finding their way to the market here in the U.S. so it might be easy to find one of those.
The important thing is milled not stamped.
Check on www.gunbroker.com which is a firearms auction site. There are always a lot of AKs on there.
Ignore the "Ask your Imam" and "Osama Envy" crowd as they are either ignorant or they are joking.
The AK-47 is an extremely reliable, fun to shoot, relatively accurate gun (I have a friend whose unmodified Russian made AK-47 will shoot a 2" 6 shot group at 100 yards).
It uses readily available, inexpensive ammunition, and is not more or less "dangerous" than any other semi-automatic firearm (I assume you are trying to get a semi-auto version as the fully auto AKs require a Federal Permit with relatively high fees and a lot of paperwork).

Less expensive than the AR-15, very inexpensive ammo, and high reliability to name just a few reasons.
I was told by a dealer that Wolf (among others) got a contract to support the Iraqi army/guard with some enormous qty..a one shot deal. The factory is at capacity.
Prices went from $75.00/1000 to $150.00/locally at the shows. Supposed to be back to normal in a month or so once the bulk of the order is filled.
I think I may have heard some badmouthing of the full-auto rifles made for their own military back in the commie days, not the present rifles built for US import.

I guess I also have to agree with you.
The SKS is a viable, less expensive alternative to the AK. I like mine a lot (all milled parts). It has never given me a minute's trouble and is "tolerable accurate" up to about 200 yards, especially for such an inexpensive ($125) rifle.
The Rom import parts are pretty good. :)
I know this place in Little Islam where they will give you one for free, With the bullets but in exchange they expect you to "Promote" in a sense their cause by causing a bit of havoc. Just ask for some guy called Usama Bin Mohammed Bin Laden or Osama Son of Mohammed Son of Laden.
yup...loads of fun for what amounts to basically a "disposable" rifle...
And I've never broken a part with 1000's of rounds through at least two of them.
These are the only surplus guns I use regularly. The rest I have for curiosity sake hence the C&R lic. I figured I could save some $$ buying old rifles just so they could sit in my safe!
If you want to purchase a genuine AK-47, you will need to apply for a Federal Tax Stamp at your State Police Headquarters after you have found a Registered Machine gun owner willing to go through the transfer process. Plan on spending $3,500.00 + for a decent one.
I'm a Machine Gun owner, they're fun to shoot, but not welcome at the local range :-)
Any cheap Romanian AK will work fine for you, they are pretty utilitarian.
