I meant the company I 'work' for...not mine.

Meanwhile plenty of programmers here in the US pound the pavement (at least in the Cleveland OH area) and the biggest employers cry for more H1b's.

Can't we do something about this?

You have to admit one thing. Speaking a foreign language does not hurt the Indians.

Think we would ever see Americans in call centers for say a Chinese company taking customer service calls in Mandarin or Hindi?

I have nothing against our sourcing and hiring foreign workers or opening up factories overseas. I do have a problem with hiring customer service and tech supports reps who speak English as a 2nd language. I think if you are going to deal with customers you need to have a mastering of the language they speak.

Before anyone jumps in with their terrible experiences with Indian call center staffers...

Last week I had a problem with my PayPal account and needed to call to set it straight.  The young woman in India was very professional (if not very technical) and was able to help me diagnose and rectify the problem within a few minutes.

It was obvious she had been through the "American accent" classes and she was very good.  The only thing that gave her away was at the very end when she asked "Is there anything else I may be helping you with today?"

I can remember calling for tech support late in the evening years ago and getting a surly American working the night shift.  And I was lucky the services was offered at all!

Having India take calls in the evening (their daytime) makes a lot of sense.

In the Tampa area, Nielsen Media Research and Verizon are employing their share as well.

I am all for making computers in India if they are sold in India. I am also against foreigners working here. India sure as Hell wouldn't want Americans in India.

Article: "Currently, the [Dell] company has three call centers in India, a product testing center for corporate customers and a global software development center. Some 10,000 people are employed at these facilities."

It seems to me that AMERICAN working mothers would like to work out of their homes for a computerized call center. By doing so, there are many advantages and savings to justify the low pay.

Uh-oh, I saw the words "new call center"...

I stopped having anything to do with Dell products after I ordered a spare disk drive for my laptop. It shipped without a plastic enclosure case that I needed, which was not in the manual and was clearly a mistake, but to get it I was going to have to pay another round of shipping charges. And I have been in IT for over 20 years and I spent all the time doing the research beforehand to make sure I knew what I was doing.

There's nothing like getting brow-beatin' and told that I am clueless by a know-it-all Indian when I am the customer... You have to experience it for yourself to understand what a unique treasure it is :-) which is why Dell can blow it forever.

I purchased $150,000 worth of Dell computers in 2005.

I have another $150,000 to purchase computers -- needless to say, it won't be spent on Dell computers..

Far better and more efficient than the billions in foreign aid we send to India.

Its time for some economic nationalism. If we continue to lose jobs like this we will become a third world nation. We need a national policy to provide incentives to manufacture within the United States. If necessary we should place tariffs on foriegn made products and offer tax reductions on products made on the homefront.Globalization has its benefits but we are now reaching a point where it will destroy our standard of living. Globalization is simply corporate welfare. We owe our citizens a decent standard of living.

I HATE HATE HATE call centers in india:

"Hello my name is (insert anglican style name)"

"I am sorry you have a problem with (insert what customer said here)"

I think companies must be REQUIRED to disclose if you service call is being forwared to outside the country of origin or the call.

I HATE HATE HATE them.
