A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Democrats suffer broken backs; Alito hearings blamed

by JohnHuang2

"The system's kind of broken," says Sen. Joe Biden. The "system" of "kind of" confirmation hearings. But Biden says Biden's not the reason the "system's kind of broken." Or, at least he's not the reason anymore. In fact, stung by criticism of being too long-winded during the John Roberts hearings, Biden whittled each question down this time to only over 20 minutes.
Appearing on NBC's "Today" show last Thursday, Biden complained that "nominees now, Democrat and Republican nominees, come before the United States Congress and resolve not to let the people know what they think about important issues." Biden's tired of nominees showing up donning white baseball caps with "PRINCETON" emblazoned in front, preening for the TV cameras. And yammering endlessly about their grandfather named Finnegan and their daughter at the University of Pennsylvania. The system is totally kinda broken!
Biden's kinda "solution"? Ditch the hearings and "just go to the Senate floor and debate the nominee's statements . . ." Make sure the 'nominee's statements' were the nominee's -- not "borrowed" language, to be sure. But that's it. "Rather than this game."
"We oughta just go straight to the Senate (floor for debate). That's a much better way to do it," Biden told NEWSWEEK.

And to show he really means it, Biden and fellow Judiciary Committee Democrats are keeping Alito's nomination from going to the Senate floor for debate. For at least one week. The press calls this 'Democrats exercising their right to a customary one-week delay .' I call it 'Democrats selecting the date they get defeated.'
Democrats delayed Bush's vote certification, delayed Cabinet appointments, delayed Judges, delayed White House pizza deliveries. So a petty one-week delay on Alito was a bit of a shock.
Specter and Leahy had struck a 'deal' back in November. Specter pushed for hearings in early January. Leahy pushed for hearings in early January, 2009. But January, 2006 it would be, with a vote in Committee on the 17th and an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor days later. Now Dems renege on the deal. One GOP Senator called it a 'breach of trust.' Libbies burn the flag, kill the unborn, appease terrorists, commit treason, shorten sentences for rapists and murderers -- BUT RENEGE ON THEIR WORD?!?
The way the process usually works is that the President announces his nomination. If the President is a Republican, and the nominee is a Republican, the nomination is "controversial." "Controversial" because Ted Kennedy calls the nominee a racist, sexist, homophobic four-legged, two-headed, flame-spewing, green-slimy-scaled monster chowing down on left-handed gay Native-American abortion doctors protesting pRESIDENT Bu$hitler's Dieboldical police state.

Given its heavy media coverage, the hearings are the first and only real chance the racist, sexist, homophobe has to clear his name. But if you're a bed-wetting losercratic clown like Joe Biden, and "Dumbya's" nominees keep handing your butt to you on live TV, scrapping the hearings and going straight for a filibuster on the Senate floor is what you want.
Rather than Judge Alito being the "freak" appointment, the only freak appointments were senators sitting on the Democrat side of the committee.

Seeing how well these hearings have gone for libbies, the Bidenocrats essentially are telling their shriveling base of morons that senators are too incompetent to judge a nominee's competence. Let the press advise and consent.
Instead of taking on the nominee in hearings, Democrats are reverting to basics: Cut and run.
During a full week of "confirmation" hearings, Judge Alito fielded more than 700 penetrating speeches and pontifications from senators. Subjects included extremely hot button issues such as application of H.R. 1646's provisions in sections 408, 616, 621, 633 and 1343 under professor John Yoo's theory of the "unitary executive" (a really tantalizing topic around the water cooler!), under which the President would actually be in charge of the government's Executive Branch -- just because Article II of the Constitution says so; Bush's scandalous decision to allow the NSA to spy on innocent al-Qaeda-Americans; Vanguard; Alito's membership in CAP (Concerned Alumni of Princeton); Vanguard; a job application Alito filled out only over 21 years ago; Vanguard. It was enough to make you leave the hearing room in tears. Of laughter.
Of all the pre-schoolery in last week's Leahy-Kennedy-Biden-Schumer-Durbin laugh-a-thon, the libbie paranoia surrounding Alito's membership in Princeton's now-defunct CAP group got the prize. Are you now, or have you ever been a member of Concerned Alumni of Princeton?, the concerned senators asked, donning their Alumni-foil hats. Never know -- with Alito in the room, NSA-satellite-beamed alien rays, and all that.

Democrats never laid a glove on him. Instead, Alito laid a glum on Democrats. Glum Democrats Can't See Halting Bush on Courts read a New York Times headline. Libbies are so glum, all they can do is watch Brokeback Mountain to keep from leaping from their apartment ledge. Or listen to Al Gore "ROAR" speeches as a sleep aid.

For a whole week, we kept hearing Democrats say how 'troubled' they were, believing this would sink Alito because it's against the law to trouble an endangered species! Despite this, Alito's a shoo-in, and Democrats, walking the planks of the Democrat platform, are still stuck-on-stupid.

Anyway, that's...

My two cents

I received that "cup of coffee" after midnight last night from an old friend - well, older than I am, and old as "in number of years (33) known"..:)

It set the scene for an absolutely STELLAR DAY - a rare one that has overflowed with blessings from dawn to now!
First, my medical appointment in Aiken wasn't until 1:30, so I was able to sleep until 8:15 and didn't have to hurry.
Although the night was cold, it warmed rapidly into the 60's (and will be in the 70's again the next 2 days).
Reaching Aiken, there was planted 4 years ago on a major roadway a row of flowering trees, with lavender blossoms already that signal winter is waning and SPRING HAS BEGUN!!

Beautiful weather - flowering trees - light traffic - and a most satisfying visit with one of my physicians, giving me a Progress Report. All three of them are fantastic, and today this one listened to and understood two important things I needed to convey...one prevented possible disaster, since they were about to start me on a new Rx that was tried on me 4 years ago with disastrous side effects, putting me down for 5 weeks.

Since the reason for it was marginal anyway, he examined me carefully (heart, neck arteries, etc.) and opted to cancel it, recording the past bad experience as his justification. The treatment would have been far worse than any possible benefit for the condition - shown to be minimal on an ultrasound in November.

We ate lunch out, and reaching home received a letter from my sister Anne (in the Assisted Living Facility), full of thanks for The Surprise Birthday Visit we had sprung on her, and for us.
Oh, those loving ties that bind!! The memories and laughter and joy we share is immeasureable. She's a gifted artist, and it was full of little illustrations.

Even making a brief shopping foray here late in the afternoon, there were up front parking spaces at 2 stores, and at Wal-Mart I found somethimg that was precisely what I was looking for. On the computer chair, I have had for years a once comfy extra cushion that now is rock hard and *not* conducive to comfort.

Thinking I could at the very least get new foam and cover that, I decided memory foam might be best.
Right at the first of the row of pillows was a just the right size, black covered square memory foam cushion with a white-edged zippered cover - when open and unfolded, it even becomes a throw!!
Another Win-Win on a whole day of special things!

What a nice overview of your day.. thank you. and how nice to have a STELLAR day huh? we all have to many of the BUMMER ones.

A really sweet gal (I think she is about your age) over on ATRW (she comes here now & then when I ping her) is BEVLAR. She sends out an almost daily "MY DAY" email to her family /friends.. it is so nice & your note reminded me of hers. She on occasion will post it also on the ATRW thread.

I posted your "cup of joy" over at ATRW. I recall that song when it came out.. I think it was 1970(or pretty close to it).. so silly & so much fun.

Well, dear Maggie, I do hope that you find sweet rest also.. nice memories of your day to close your eyes upon.

14 angels to attend you...as you catch God's rest for tomorrow

Great commentary on the "condemnation" hearings!

These Dem ("dim") politicians are clearly out of touch with America's hardworking citizens and deeply indebted to their unions and special interests--so much so that they will make fools of themselves to please their Radical Left handlers.

As I wrote on another thread concerning the likes of Kennedy, Biden, Leahy, et al:

"The Democrats still haven't figured out that the basic common sense of Americans out there in non-Hollywood, non-northeastern liberal, non-ACLU/NEA/People for the American Way/NOW world enables the ordinary citizen to understand the stakes in this war, and they believe we elect a President to protect us from terrorists.

In the Hollywood/Liberal/ACLU/NEA/PAW/NOW world, a President is merely a puppet on their string (like Clinton), not the Founders' vision of a constitutionally empowered Executive who provides leadership during times of crisis and doesn't consult their so-called "polls" to decide on his next move.

That American citizens understand what 9/11 meant, that we were attacked and are at war, and that such a non-traditional (nation against nation) war requires non-conventional strategies may come as a surprise to Democrats. It may also surprise them that when they named the screaming Dean to be their Party's logo, they lost whatever credibility the Party once had with ordinary Americans.

I have a gig of memory, too, Dolly. Don't know what the problem was - it just would not move off that "loading" page earlier. I clicked the link again just now, and bingo! it popped right up. (no bunny in that cup, Maggie)

It was cute as can be. :)

What a lovely reply, Dolly!
It is very much appreciated, and I hope you soon have a wrinkle-free day.

"I posted your "cup of joy" over at ATRW. I recall that song when it came out.. I think it was 1970(or pretty close to it).. so silly & so much fun."

It was around 1971, Dolly, when my sons were teenagers, and played endlessly - probably why it delighted me so!
The house we rented then had a screened in & over large swimming pool with cabana right off the living room, and there were many gatherings of kids...they had so much fun dancing to it..:))

On weekends, there were always 5-6 teenage boys spending the weekend, with Mommo's Rules Strictly Followed.
The dining and living rooms were carpeted, and they sprawled out there, and were to bring their own sheets, pillows, blankets and TOWELS - and take them HOME to launder!!

I was at work every other Saturday, but they were all well behaved. They had to help the boys CLEAN THE POOL in order to keep coming back. (slave labor!)
IF they cooked, they ate, and had to do all their dishes.

They were allowed to stay up as late as they liked so long as they did not disturb The Parents (we had another tv in our bedroom) and/or the neighbors.
In Melbourne then was a radio station with a DJ you could call on air, and they often did. Sensing these boys were bright and polite, he several times invited then to go down there at 1 a.m. and be on air with them!
We gave permission, of course, and they had a great time.

It always puzzled me how the parents of the other boys were so happy to have their sons away from them, not wanting "noise."
WE wanted to know where ours were, and what they were doing!!
